The Sun Editor Harry Cole Wears Soviet Hat As He Mocks ‘Ruthless Starmer’ For Soviet-Style ‘Purge’ Of ‘Corbynites’
The Sun’s political editor Harry Cole donned a Soviet military hat and played the USSR’s national anthem as he mocked Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer in announcing that “those loyal to former General Secretary Corbyn have been disposed of.”
In recent days, Labour have blocked two MPs who were frontbenchers in former leader Jeremy Corbyn’s shadow government from running in the upcoming election. These include MP Lloyd Russell-Moyle, who also received a suspension following a “serious complaint” made against him, and MP Diane Abbott, who had the whip restored Tuesday following a period of suspension but who says she is barred from standing in the election – a claim the party denied.
On Wednesday night the party also dropped support for left-wing candidate Faiza Shaheen for liking a tweet featuring a comedy skit about Israel by U.S. comedian Jon Stewart.
Hosting the latest episode of the election-focused podcast Never Mind The Ballots, Cole began: “I must report news of great purges overnight. General Secretary Starmer has rid the party of many enemies. Those loyal to former General Secretary Corbyn have been disposed of by Commissar McSweeney.”
Running through the Labour candidates and politicians at the centre of a swirling crisis engulfing the party, Cole continued: “It is also my duty to report the title of Hero of the Revolution has been handed to Comrade Abbott, but she has been purged. Comrade Russell Moyle, also purged for reasons undisclosed to the people. And Comrade Shaheen, purged also for refusing re-education.”
He added: “No, seriously, Ruthless Starmer is on the rampage this morning and the left are going bananas. Our clash of the day, Starmer versus the Corbynites.”
Labour’s actions have ignited a row within the party with some accusing the Labour Party of trying to “cull” its most left-wing candidates, Starmer’s shadow minister Darren Jones denied this to the BBC on Wednesday and said most candidates for the party would class themselves as left-wing.
