Tory Confusion As GB News Presenter Made ‘Anti-Woke’ Common Sense Tsar
GB News presenter Esther McVey will spearhead Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s “anti-woke” agenda, after he invited her to join the cabinet as Common Sense Tsar — a new role that confused even elected Conservatives like Sir Conor Burns.
Speaking to BBC’s Politics Live on Tuesday, Burns laughed off a question about what the Common Sense Tsar would do.
“Lord knows…” he said.
Officially designated as a minister without portfolio, McVey has been humourously referred to as a “common sense tsar.” This appointment is part of Sunak’s broader cabinet reshuffle, following the dismissal of former Home Secretary Suella Braverman from her cabinet position.
Braverman’s firing was influenced by her controversial article in The Times, where she criticized senior police officers for allegedly showing bias against right-wing extremists compared to pro-Palestinian protesters. This action was seen as the culmination of her history of making unscripted comments that often put her at odds with Downing Street.
Addressing Braverman’s situation, McVey commented last week on GB News, highlighting the need for Braverman to build a stronger base within the right wing of the party. She pointed out the unresolved immigration issues and the necessity for Braverman to secure support from a faction that Sunak might struggle to connect with.
McVey’s new role is perceived as a strategic step by Sunak to strengthen his position within the party by appeasing this right-wing faction.
