Baltimore Photog Thrown to Ground by Police While Covering Freddie Gray Protest
A Baltimore photographer was roughed up by police on Saturday night while he was covering protests over the death of Freddie Gray, who died in police custody.
According to City Paper, their photo editor J.M. Giordano was thrown to the ground and “beaten.” The encounter was caught on video by City Paper managing editor Baynard Woods, who could be heard yelling, “He’s a photographer! He’s press!”
Giordano was standing with a line of protesters when one of them threw a rock at police officers. “They mobilized,” he said. “I always move at the last second.” He was then, according to City Paper, hit with a police shield and knocked to the ground by five or six police officers. Giordano also claimed police tried to prevent him from shooting video.
Baltimore Police did not respond to City Paper‘s requests for comment. The newspaper said Giordano sustained minor injuries on his arm, and will continue to cover the demonstrations. Elsewhere during the protests, a Russia Today reporter was attacked and robbed by protesters while she was filming them.
