Brexit Champ Nigel Farage Resigns: ‘I’ve Done My Bit’

Just weeks after leading a rebellion of sorts atop the UK Independence Party and championing the people of Britain to leave the European Union, Nigel Farage announced moments ago that he is resigning.

The newest twist in the bizarre saga of the Brexit aftermath showed Farange speaking to reporters, where he said, “My aim in being in politics was to get Britain out of the European Union. That is what we voted for in the referendum two weeks ago.”

17 millions voters took to the polls to declare in a stunning move that Britain would no longer remain in the EU after decades of membership. Farage was the chief architect of the move, and one of the most visible forces of the vote.

“That is why I now feel that I have done my bit,” he continued Monday. “I couldn’t possibly achieve more than we managed to get in that referendum and so I feel it’s right that I now step aside.” Farage made headlines the morning after the EU vote when he was the first official to admit that many of the Leave campaign’s claims — namely that Britain’s payment of £350 million a week to the EU would be rerouted to national healthcare — were not true.

The move from Farage — who publicly has been a despised and cantankerous member of Parliament — comes just days after former London Mayor Boris Johnson announced that he would not seek the role of Prime Minister. Johnson was another very vocal and visible supporter of the Leave movement, and following the announced resignation of Prime Minister David Cameron just hours after the vote, many had thought that Johnson would assume leadership. Farage had simply weighed in on the role of PM saying that it would be “inconceivable” for the next leader to be someone who supported the Remain movement.
