Crashergate Hearing: Secret Service Learned About Breach from Facebook

SALAHII’m at the House Committee on Homeland Security hearing on Crashergate, where Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan spent the morning on the hot seat for his agency’s failure to repel uninvited guests Michaele and Tareq Salahi from last Tuesday’s White House state dinner. Among the revelations this morning is the embarrassing fact that, according to Sullivan, the Secret Service learned of the breach on Facebook.

Also new is the fact that, as Sullivan says, “the officers are all on administrative leave, with pay” pending completion of the investigation. As far as I know, this is the first time the agency has said that there was more than one officer involved in the breach.

As we went to recess, I tried to question Sullivan about how many officers were involved, and if they had consulted anyone at all before allowing the Salahis onto the White house grounds, but one  of his aides body-checked me into the banister as Sullivan strode down the stairs.

Thus far, committee members from both parties have condemned the White House for not making social secretary Desiree Rogers available to the committee.

Interesting. Especially in light of the fact that the reporter actually questioned Mrs. Obama’s staff on the night of the function regarding why these two were there but not on the list. So a reporter pointed it out to the FLOTUS’s staff, but they didn’t do anything, and didn’t report it to the Secret Service.

Another interesting point, or so I read (I didn’t watch the hearings), is that the SS said these stories that the threat against Obama is higher than in the past are false, no more threats against Obama than his predecessor.

Now This: New Oval Office Rug Wrongly Attributes MLK’s Quote?

File this under things that would likely not have been a problem before the Internet. While President Obama was on vacation the Oval Office got a (very beige) makeover. The major contribution to the new look is a new oval rug featuring famous quotes from past presidents and one from Martin Luther King. Except apparently King is not the originator of the quote.

Kanye West’s Long Twitter Apology to Taylor Swift: ‘I’ve Hurt, I’ve Bled, I’ve Learned’

Twitter is the new Oprah. Just ahead of next Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards Kanye West spent yesterday penning a long apology to Taylor Swift on Twitter. And I mean long. As in 70-plus tweets. Says Kanye: "I've hurt, I've bled, I've learned. I only want to do good. I am passionate I am human I am real. I wish I could meet every hater." Also: "Beyonce didn't need that. MTV didn't need that and Taylor and her family friends and fans definitely didn't want or need that." Also, he wrote her a new song.
