Eric Massa Leaving After 1st Term: Poor Health Or Sexual Harassment?

It is not a good week for Democrats in Congress…first there was Charlie Rangel last night, now New York Rep. Eric Massa claims he will not be seeking reelection on the advice of his doctor after a recurrence of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma left him hospitalized in December. But that may not be all there is to the story, since Massa made his announcement today directly after blogs began to report that the House Ethics Committee received allegations that Massa was sexually harassing a male staffer.
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said any supposed complaints had nothing to do with Massa leaving, and when Politico asked the Congressman if his leaving had anything to do with the rumors, he replied that no one has brought any misconduct allegations to him. He added:
“When someone makes a decision to leave Congress, everybody says everything. I have health issues. I’ll talk about it [later].”
The Congressman claimed he was guilty of using “salty language” in office, but has “apologized for it.” He is currently married with two children.
Massa is asking Hornell Mayor Shawn Hogan to run in his place.
