Federal Judge Rules Against Police in Ferguson Protest Case

A federal judge ruled Tuesday that police in Ferguson, Mo., infringed on the First Amendment when they told local protesters they could not stand still, according to CNN.

The shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown, an unarmed black man, by white police officer Darren Wilson in August sparked unrest in Ferguson. Many TV news reports showed police forcing proters who gathered in the city streets to disperse or move from their locations.

The judge, Catherine Perry, ruled that police have the right to engage in crowd control measures but issued an injunction that “prevents only the enforcement of an ad hoc rule developed for the Ferguson protests.”

A grand jury is currently deliberating whether Wilson, who claims he fired on Brown in self defense, will be charged with a crime.
