Obama Plays The Race Card?

Is the country ready for six more months of this sort of thing? Early this morning the Democratic National Committee released this extremely short video of President Obama rallying constituents ahead of the 2010 midterms. Pretty tame stuff: The President encouraging his base to come out in support of likely beleaguered party members in an upcoming election. That constituency included “”young people, African-Americans, Latinos, and women who powered our victory in 2008 [to] stand together once again.” What that got translated into courtesy of Drudge was Obama “playing the race card.” Yes. The less hyperbolic reality is this, per Ben Smith:

Turning out those so-called “surge” voters — who turned out for the first time to back Obama, but who sat out gubernatorial races in New Jersey and Virginia last year — has become the Democrats’ central pre-occupation for the midterm elections.

What the right’s “pre-occupation for the midterm elections” is going to be is less clear but judging from this sort of thing it’s not going to be pretty six months. Video of the clip below.

    Glynnis,
Ask yourself this, if Bush has implored white males to get to the polls, would you have considered that racist? And if you would, wouldn’t this be Obama playing the race card?

  • timzank

Thanks Mr. Post Racial President, oh wait, that’s right you weren’t talking to me.

  • timzank

michelleF, common sense has no place in liberal politics and journalism. We are all racists, get used to it.

  • Snipzor

He’s also totally playing the age card and the gender card (Maybe the sex card, no, gender and sex are not the same thing). Or if we actually look at this intelligently (Or anyway that isn’t from the perspective of Drudge), he’s pretty much telling a voting block to go vote. But who needs reality when we have the comfort of hyperbole?! It’s a million billion times more fun than the disease ridden nuclear bomb-like reality we should face.

  • The_Reasonable_Lib

I really don’t see a race isue here. He’s simply urging those who voted for him already to get out and vote again in the midterm elections. How is that playing the race card? Snipzor has a point, he must’ve been playing the gender card as well. Wait, what if he said homosexuals too? Would he be playing the gay-card?

  • Snipzor

He should have used that “card” as well, obviously Obama is ungrateful that gays voted en masse (And that’s not hyperbole) for him. Y’know, show a little appreciation for a fixed voting block… oh wait, he doesn’t have to because gays will vote for the party that didn’t push for the sodomy laws… wait, no democrats wanted to keep them as well… well that made me depressed quickly.

But yea, all this outrage is grasping at straws, otherwise the conservatives above would complain about the gender/sex card, or the age card.

  • MichelleF

Reasonbile lib, since i know Glynnis won’t ever respond to me, I would love to get your take:

Ask yourself this, if Bush has implored white males to get to the polls, would you have considered that racist? And if you would, wouldn’t this be Obama playing the race card?

To be clear, I’m not saying this is playing the race card (although I do think BO plays it), but I’m looking for consistency, as always.

  • NORBIT

Democrats have been playing it for 50 years!

What have Democrats done for blacks in 50 years? – How’s life in Chicago these days?

They keep them on the “liberal plantation” by SMEARING Republicans as “racist”.
…and they use their lapdog media (NY Times, AP, NBC…) to spread the SMEAR!

  • MichelleF

    Well said, Norbit.

  • felixw

A Democrat playing the race card is not news. If a day went by without a prominent Democrat playing the race car, now that would be a big story.

No takers? Okkedokke, I will check back after I get back from my weekly 24 party to see if there are any libs with the intellectual honesty to answer the question. Adios!

  • Snipzor

So if Bush had told white males to go vote, and only white males, wouldn’t it actually show that republicans have relied on the southern strategy even in the 21st century? He would be only telling white males to go vote, which is pointless in itself because white males vote en masse anyways. Besides, Obama addressed minority groups that seldom vote as much as white males (Proportionally), not just one minority group. You know, women, who don’t vote 100% along democratic lines. Also Latinos, who also don’t vote 100% along democratic lines.

Could it be he’s just telling them to vote?! No, that would be logical.

  • NORBIT

The mediaites falling all over themselves to explain Obama’s call-to-action are the same ones who try SMEARING the Tea Partyer’s with “Why are there no black people here?”

Well, to paraphrase on Obama’s list, “Why are there no white people here?”

I don’t think Obama is a racist, just, like the rest of the Progressive Democrats, a racial exploiter (ala Al Sharpton).

  • timzank

He’s saying very clearly “I need all you MINORITIES to get out there and vote so whitey don’t win. Give him credit for not being the least bit bashful I guess.

Anybody see the videos of the tolerant pro illegal alien left lobbing bottles at cops in Phoenix? Probably won’t here, But if the tea party has a rally and someone raises their voice they’ll be on here as intolerant racists.

  • MarkStr82Hell

If you want repect in this world it must be earned. You’re not as great as you think you are, Mr. President

You never read the headlines on Drudge and let that be all you take away. Drudge’s headlines often bear no resemblance at all to the story. Remember, all he does is link to real news sites.

This is a strawman….and a terrible one at that. Let me ask you a similar question. What if Bill Clinton had said the very same thing Obama did? Would you be implying that he’s playing the race card too? It’s convenient for one to ignore context of statements and simplify them with demagoguery. The voting groups Obama was urging to go out to the polls are his base! Republicans do the very same thing with white middle aged folks who are their base by codifying it as “mainstream America” or by using other innocuous memes.

Furthermore, there’s no equivalency in your statement. Obama did not implore white people not to go to the polls. That is your concocted comprehension. Young people (a majority who are white and college going) are a huge Obama voting block. May want to check out Gallup polling some time.

  • tjl

timzank, how many black friends do you have?

  • tjl

Averreauxil, you can’t expect MichelleF to understand. Wait for Fox News to form an opinion for her and then she can join the discussion. Thanks! (p.s. how was your 24 party??)

  • MarkStr82Hell

LMAO. Lets assess who the democrats are:
People who live off someone else
    a) college kids off their parents
    b) blacks http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4865449
    c) mexicans making under 30k
    d) activist homosexuals

  • Snipzor

I love being called an “Activist Homosexual”. How dare I place my political affiliation to someone who doesn’t want to see me shot out of a cannon into the sun (Lesser of two evils, I know). As if my sexual orientation towards guys totally makes me a bad person. I also love the negative connotation you placed on the word homosexual. As if it’s a bad word, which is funny, because I think it’s an awesome word.

First off, what was the point of linking that article? Are you implying that all blacks have children out of wedlock? If so, then why did you bother linking that article?! Second, how is it that those four groups represent the plurality of the American people? Oh, yea, you didn’t think that brain fart through. Obviously.

  • MarkStr82Hell

Are you implying that all blacks have children out of wedlock?

Did you read it besides the title, sweetie?

    70%

  • Snipzor

But Mark, is there any actual reason for you to post that article? Any reason, just one. What, because you want to say blacks are inferior to whites, and therefore are more likely to vote for the wrong party? Because that’s what it reads. Unless you can actually provide a reason for its reference, anything you say in regards to minorities is forever suspect. That’s generally how it works.

hey, you got one of those census jobs, didn’t ya? Good or you!

  • Snipzor

Also note, you just wrote “blacks *followed by article*”, so any nuance you might like to add at this point is completely worthless.

no once race is more important than another. the difference between a liberal and conservative is someone who lives carelessly because they are immature or are ignorant versus someone who have integrity to act responsibly. ONLY we can resolve poverty, crime, suicide amd substance abuse. Goverment is NOT the answer Its the decisions WE make. Its starts when a lonely girl brings a child into this world with no finances. Grow up and live within your means Stop blaming your misery on Sarah Palin and Fox News.

  • Snipzor

Answer the question Mark. What was the context of linking that 5 year old article? Don’t change the subject.

  • MarkStr82Hell

Weak comeback. The stats have actually worsened since. You’re making a fool of yourself.
I love when fiesty homosexuals challenge me. It gives me a huge hardon

    http://www.amren.com/mtnews/archives/2009/04/out-of-wedlock.php

  • Snipzor

So because the newer generation doesn’t give a shit about marriage, they (And in your mind, it only applies to blacks) are inferior (People who have children out of wedlock don’t all have absent fathers)? Your logic is quite pathetic. Let me ask again, what is the context of posting the article right next to blacks?

  • MarkStr82Hell

I love being called an “Activist Homosexual”. How dare I place my political affiliation to someone who doesn’t want to see me shot out of a cannon into the sun (Lesser of two evils, I know). It is an awesome word. Some are activists and some just go with the flow

OMG! He’s calling on women to vote as well! Is there no end to this assault on white male American values? What’s next, non-Protestants?

    Clearly, the nation is doomed…

  • The_Reasonable_Lib

    @ MichelleF says:
    April 26, 2010 at 6:40 pm:
To be bluntly honest, yes, I probably would. But, there is a difference between telling white males to vote and telling political minorities to vote. White males have a controlling stake in all manner of political activities, most of the groups mentioned don’t. These groups are also considered to be the democrat’s base. So, I see this more as rallying the base. I realize that there is a degree of hypocrisy in that, but the Republican party also rallies their base. The two parties have different bases. There’s a difference between asking those who lack sufficient representation to go out and seek that and asking those who already have control to exercise that control.

  • MichelleF

    Averreauxii says:

I never said he did play the race card, I’m just wondering if Bush had told white, male voters to go out and vote if glynnis and her lib friends would have said he was playing the race card? Let’s not dance around in circles, we all know the answer.

  • MichelleF

RL, I’m all for rallying the base, I’m just doing my part to point out lib hypocrisy when I see it. That is my goal. I’m not saying R’s don’t do it.

It’s like all of the attention tiller’s murderer got, but the guy who murdered the pro-lifer because he didn’t like his sign got hardly any. This week he was just sentenced to 99 years and not a peep. I of course asked Mediaite to point that out, but did they, of course not. Or how about how they focus on the so-called hate from the right. I’ve sent mediaite 3 seperate stories on mike malloy, lib talker, saying absoluetly hateful things and again, not a peep. I’ve decided to every once in a while, just post in the comments what they didn’t deem worthy and parallel stories on the other side that they highlight.

  • Averreauxii

Bush would not have done it so your hypothetical argument is redundant. He didn’t need to. He had his own ways of exciting his base.

One thing to note is Bush was very loved in Africa where racial politics do not stain every day conversation. I am not a Republican or a conservative but I never had the particular personal vitriol towards Bush that most liberals did and still do.

I despise it when every damn thing is viewed through a racial prism. There was nothing racial about Obama’s statement but the usual racial baiters couldn’t resist to make it so.

  • AmericanCowboy

    Race Baiting

The race baiting currently being perpetrated by the left is designed to stifle intelligent debate. When the left is forced to address facts and logical thought, they NEVER, NEVER, NEVER have a leg to stand. They attempt to change the subject or randomly claim racism for no apparent reason. It is a little like turrets syndrome, racism just pops out of their mouth randomly. America is wise to this. Racism does not carry the meaning it had a year ago.
Racist is now defined as the following
    rac•ist [rey-sizt]
    -adj
    1. any American who’s beliefs differ from that of the current Communist President’s Administration or his lunatic Liberals followers

  • MichelleF

I despise it when every damn thing is viewed through a racial prism. There was nothing racial about Obama’s statement but the usual racial baiters couldn’t resist to make it so.

I 100% agree with you, but if you are calling me a race baiter, you coudn’t be further from the truth. I leave that to Sharpton, Jackson, and the dems.

  • Latin2

I am Latina and Obama IS playing the race.

Imagine if this was turned around and a candidate said “I want all the white people to get out and vote for ….”

    hat is racist.

  • Averreauxii

Latin2, that is nonsense. “Young people” is not race exclusive. “Women” is not race exclusive. Why are you selectively reading and equally selectively responding to his statement? There is nothing “racist” about that. It’s not intellectually honest. Of course he would reach out to AA. 96% voted for him. He is not on the ballot this time around and hence he has to persuade these reluctant voters to get out and vote for the dems! It is called…..LOGIC. I have linked to a Gallup poll that explains WHY he was reaching out to these groups. You can choose to selectively read it as well.

MichelleF, I never said you were the race baiter. The race baiter I was referring to was the Drudge Report lede that was the source of these shenanigans. I hoped that was obvious.

    Earth to Obama…
In case you haven’t heard, you’ve ‘done absolutely nothing right’ in 4 years as president
Everything that you did do while in office screwed the American people
If there is anyone that will vote for you in 2012, it will only be because you are black
    This not racist
This is not about color, like you would like to make it
It is simply about your record for the last 4 years
Your report card for 4 years is………….’F’
If there were a lower grade to give I would apply that, But I do not believe a ‘Z’ would fit in this case

WORST PRESIDENT ‘EVER’ IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES
I sure hope that you will see this remark, because you have insulted the intelligence of the American people by running for a second term.
