Obama’s Riveting Meeting With House Republicans (FULL VIDEO)

A lot of people have been screaming for transparency on a number of issues of late and today both the GOP and President Obama complied…did they ever (UPDATE: Apparently it was televised at Obama’s insistence). The President met with Congressional Republicans at their retreat in Baltimore to lead what the New York Times described as “a rare, sustained and unscripted exchange over the best way to address the nation’s ills.” Without question it makes for riveting watching. So much so a slew of people on Twitter called for it to be a regular feature (just as many were asking where they could watch a rerun…answer: below!)

Mark Knoller said he thought it was “a first for a sitting President to take questions, on live TV, from members of Congress of the opposing party” before noting that “on Oct 17, 1974, Pres. Gerald Ford appeared before Congress to answer questions about the Nixon pardon.” Not quite the same thing this time around.

The hour-long back and forth also drew plenty of (mostly admirable) comparisons to the British (and Canadian!) Parliamentary question period. Though apparently there was some quiet mumbling that it maybe the decision to broadcast the exchange was not in the GOP’s best interests. Though, John Boehner seemed in fairly high spirits afterwards. Either way, it was one of those rare occasions where for a full 66 minutes C-SPAN was providing the must-see TV of the day

From a radical Independent; Cudos to President Obama for imploring Republicans to help get something done for the country and for the folks. To wish for the complete failure of this Administration is despicable.

    But, it’s what they do!

Sorry roxsteady, you’ve shown yourself to be an entrenched ideologue that would not know the meaning of compromise if sat on your face and wiggled. Just sayin.

I’m certainly no fan of President Obama’s but I have to give him credit for what he did today. He spent more than an hour taking everything thrown his way. He could have just shown up and taken 4 or 5 questions and been gone in half an hour. He was a stand-up guy to give 66 minutes of his time. What remains to be seen is how much was just empty rhetoric and how much we’ll see put into practice.

I think it would be healthy for our democracy to have every president do a Q & A like this every month or every couple of months.

Remember when Obama got 8 questions from the press during the campaign and was like, “That’s enough, guys” – that seems like a long time ago.

That was pretty impressive… as I said on the other post about this.

Trickeltown! It would be better if you could stick to the subject matter. This article isn’t about me, it’s about the President and the idiots he schooled today. You don’t know me and I don’t know you so, let’s not even try to pretend. Everyone here can admit that the President cleaned their clocks today. Why can’t you deal with it? You’ve shown yourself to be incapable of dealing with the facts. You fit right in with that delusional party!

Wow – Obama took it to the GOP and cleaned their clocks. I especially like what he did to Jeb/Jim hesarlingsomething or other. And Fox Not News, the RNC propaganda outlet that it is, must have seen it coming – they interrupted it and tried to spin it bad. But it’s not selling that way – Politico, Daily Beast, all the news outlets except perhaps Fox Not News is spinning it negative for GOP. He keeps on this tack he’s going to beat them senseless around the neck and ears.

Chris Mathews discussed the hypocrisy of the simpletons in the audience when he reminded us that there were no bill proposals reflecting all those “great ideas” for reforming health care when Republicans controlled congress for 6 years under Bush.

Are we to believe that Republicans grew a conscience in the past year? Not likely.

“Chris Matthews discussed…” (Said in all earnestness.) Wow, the Obama implosion is more apparent than I thought.

I think he still held out hope of breaking through and making progress on the people’s business, but I hope he’ll use those other hypocrisy aces he held back today, if needed in the future, like Chris Matthews was saying.

This could have been far more brutal on Republicans, given their utter intellectually dishonest proposals where the prescription and cause for what ails America are one in the same; that they repeat ad nauseum regardless of the relation to the truth.

One could hope conservatives will recognize their ideas don’t work and will continue destroying us unless we radically change course, and therefore want to help America – I’m game.

Obama’s approvals are plummeting faster than ever recorded, there is a $14,000,000,000,000 debt, the Democrats have achieved nothing in the first year since their total ascent to power, no terrorist trials in NYC, the administration is exposed as mostly Maoist ideologues, a Republican win in Massachusetts… And we hear “One could hope conservatives will recognize their ideas don’t work.” JimR, you’re joking, of course.

I actually thought the one who was swatted back the best and easiest was Mike Pence at the very beginning. His “boutique tax cuts” and several other partisan statements were more than easy for Obama to rebut. That set the stage for the whole rest of the meeting. Pence blew it.

Did Matthews say that there were no bills for things like giving Americans the same tax credits for insurance premiums that employers receive or did he say they never got out of committee?

Democrats have had a super majority and they don’t seem to have the ability to get anything done either.
