Pope Warns Against ‘Walled-Up Citizens’ in Global Politics, Twitter Users Freak Out
You know Pope Francis, right? He’s, well, the Pope and also one of the people that Donald Trump has picked a public fight with. You know Trump, too, yes? He’s the guy running for President who has loudly announced his plan to build a wall between the border of the United States and Mexico.
Per ABC News, Pope Francis said the following last night during the Third World Meeting of Popular Movements, a collection of grassroots groups representing the poor:
No tyranny can be sustained without exploiting our fears … Citizens are walled-up, terrified on one side; on the other side, even more terrified, are the excluded and banished.
“Exploiting our fears” like calling Mexicans rapists and drug dealers and saying a wall will keep them out? That’s how plenty of people interpreted the comments, which is why Twitter predictably was filled with opinions:
I WARNED YOU ABOUT THIS COMMUNIST POPE IN ;SCORCHED EARTH’. HERE YOU SEE THE FORMER CLUB BOUNCER ATTACKING TRUMP…. https://t.co/Bwlj3tev93

Pope says to build bridges instead of walls. I’ll take him seriously when he tears down that 40 foot wall around the Vatican. #hypocrite

The Pope hasn’t been this controversial in an election since John F. Kennedy ran in 1960.
