The World’s First Transgender Doll is Finally Here

The world finally has its first transgender doll, and it didn’t come a moment too soon. This week, President Donald Trump and his administration rolled back a policy that allowed students to use whatever bathroom they felt comfortable in under Title IX. Lots of people have had things to say about it.

Tonner Doll, a New York based doll company is moving in the opposite direction. Last week, at the Toy Fair in New York City, the company brought a prototype. The doll is based on Jazz Jennings, a 16-year-old transgender teenager who has identified as female since she was just a toddler, according to Fortune.

Jennings Instagrammed a photo of the doll:

This is the first transgender doll on the market, and guess what?! It’s ME!!!?? @tonnerdoll did a great job of creating this beautiful item! It will be available in July, and I hope that it can place transgender people in a positive light by showing that we are just like all other people? For those asking: the doll is considered to be the first “transgender” doll because it’s based on an individual who is trans. Of course it is still just a regular girl doll because that’s exactly what I am: a regular girl!?

She writes that she hopes, “It can place transgender people in a positive light by showing that we are just like all other people.” Jennings notes that “Of course it is still just a regular girl doll because that’s exactly what I am: a regular girl!”
