Watch Common’s White House Poetry Performance

Video

Common‘s appearance at the White House has caused its fair share of controversy, particularly among Fox News pundits, but not too much has been said about his actual performance at a poetry event hosted by Michelle Obama.

So check it out for yourselves and let us know what you think. Did his poem have a good message? Did he successfully pull off using the line “Barack us”?

    I give it a 70 .

Good beat , but hard to load your nine to it .

Common being on his best behaviour last night, is the equivalent of a black racist convicts performance in front of the parole board.

Do YOU really believe him not calling for the murder of some ‘ white pig ‘ on the New Jersey Turnpike while at the White House changes anything?

……..and us conservatives are suppose to be the dumb, uneducated ones.

Considering the industry he’s in, let’s hope he takes his own words to heart that “this ain’t the way Langston Hughes wrote us”.

Selling THAT message could accomplish TREMENDOUS good for the “youth market’ — red or yellow, black and white…

I’m just happy We the ” real ” American people forced him ( Common ) to do the RIGHT thing. Just like The Donald forced Barack to stop f***ing with us and produce that second birth certificate.

If you’re doing the RIGHT thing there isn’t a gotdamn thing the white man can do or say to change it.

That IS his message and it always has been. The word people keep posting were taken waaaaaay out of context. He’s always advocated making something better of ourselves and solving the problems in the black community ourselves. He’s always advocated self-respect and spoke on social issues. Yes, I’ve heard the argument that the lyrics about busting racist cops was just a brief sidestep from Common’s usual cuddly songmeistering.

Again, if he advocates against violence in our culture, then he doesn’t need any brief forays outside of THAT message, particularly considering the industry that he’s in.

He can’t have it both ways, and neither can you.

No, it wasn’t. It was the same, but taken out of context. After those lyrics he says “No time for that”. He’s always spoken on violence vividly as he condemns it. He even does so in the video when he talks about kids having guns on their dressers. He didn’t deviate, Fox and other right-wing outlets just cherry picked to make it seem like he did. Don’t you find it ironic that out of nearly 20 years of work they could only find this and even then had to take the words out of context?

He named his daughter after the cop killer Assata. That’s a pretty strong endorsement of the the cop killer, no? How would you like to be her? “What a lovely name dear, how did your parents come up with that?”

How f***ed up is it that these weasely libs are so insecure being who they aren’t….they insist upon changing their names and avatars…sometimes two, maybe three times a day.

A “real ” American has no reason to be embarrassed or hide behind a different persona with each changing day or poll. Libs most likely engage in this juvenille behavior because they actually hate themselves more than they hate us ” real ” Americans, yet their just too dumb to realize it’s so.

  • TillieGlockenspiel

A lot of people voted for 0bama with the “hope” that he would “change” the racial dialogue in the country, only to find out that his whole modus operandi is to encourage divisions along racial and class lines. Divide and conquer seems to be his mantra. “Common” aka “Common Sense” (really???) aka Lonnie Lynn Rashid, Jr., the son of an NBA basketball player, is symptomatic of the 0bama point of view- divisive and prejudiced.

But there is because you’re trying to portray him as violent when he’s not. Yes, the New Jersey police would be outraged. Especially when the police officer who was a witness lied in the trial and admitted that he never saw Assata with a gun and there was no gun present with her dna on it. She was convicted but due to New Jersey law it isn’t necessary to prove she fired any shots because being an accomplice carries the same sentence. Knowledge is power.

Straw man again, sir. I’m merely saying stop portraying her as a cop killer when there is no evidence so. Don’t portray Common as a sympathizer of violence and cop killers when there is no evidence to suggest that the person in question is a cop killer. There was absolutely nothing wrong with this poem/song/message. Personally, I thought it was a great message to black America as well as the culture at large. There were many other poets and song writers invited to the event that was intended to reflect the pop culture of our nation. Under that context, anything Common has written should be taken as a statement from his life’s experiences, yes – the color of skin, his friends, faith and family. His words and insight should be heard – you don’t have to agree with the delivery of the message or even the message. Poetry, music, film, art in general should be taken in the context of the intentions of the artist, to reinterpret it as something it is not, is as bad as making assumptions about the something you know nothing about.

  • The_Reasonable_Lib

But it doesn’t when the person in question fired no shots and had no gun and what he does is question justice in such an instance. No matter how you try to spin it you won’t make it right.
Her conviction doesn’t say otherwise. The prosecution made no move to prove her actions and the officer said that he lied and there was no evidence to suggest she had a gun. How could she have shot somebody with no gun? How can she be a cop killer in that case? Under New Jersey law being an accomplice carries the same sentence, they only had to prove that 1 person shot and killed.
Straw man? That’s not straw man. I’m drawing an analogy. Analogies aren’t straw man.

I don’t need to in order to know the law. In accordance with New Jersey law being an accomplice in a murder case nets the same sentence i.e. 1st 2nd degree murder.
