‘We Know Very, Very Little About His Finances’: Maddow Talks Importance of Trump’s Tax Returns

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow appeared on ABC’s The View a few days after her big report on Donald Trump‘s 2005 tax returns.

Naturally, that’s what the panelists wanted to talk about.

The well-rated host revealed that her first thought upon getting the tax returns she presented in a much-hyped segment was, “Don’t get pranked.” She was wary of a forgery, but knew the importance of showcasing such a document from the only candidate in modern memory — let alone actual president — who didn’t release their tax returns during the campaign season.

Maddow explained, “We know very, very little about his finances. One of the things that seems important to me about getting that little piece of it is that it proves you can release some of his tax information without the world ending. He’s had weird excuses for not releasing his taxes. ‘I’m under audit.’ Well, every president has been under audit since Nixon and they’ve all released their tax returns … We’ve now seen with me releasing these two pages that you can release it and it’s not necessarily bad news. Why are you so afraid?”

“Because he didn’t give you the pages that really would tell you anything and the tax returns you would get would indict him with the influence in Russia, that’s why,” said Joy Behar, bringing up the theory that Trump sent the tax returns himself.

“It totally could have come from Trump,” Maddow admitted after some pressing from Sara Haines. “Which is like, such a bizarre human drama at the center of this.”

Still, she insisted, the only element of the story that matters to her is that the tax returns are real.

Watch above to see how she responded to criticism of how long she drew out the hype and preamble when presenting the documents.
