Eric Holder Tells NY Times He’s Taking Hits For Obama Because “We’re Both African American”

The New York Times has a new profile out today about Attorney General Eric Holder, detailing how he has become a “partisan lightning rod” and frequent target of conservatives over his pursuance of issues like illegal immigration and gay rights. In the piece, Holder claims that many of his critics are playing “Washington ‘gotcha games,’” viewing him as someone who takes “consistently progressive stands” instead of examining his record and seeing that he takes a more realistic view of law enforcement.

In the past few weeks, presidential candidate Herman Cain has not backed away from talking about his racial identity and how it influences his politics, and today on Meet The Press, Cain explained that he personally would rather be referred to as a “black American” than an “African American.”

Over the weekend a tipster directed our attention to a part of the “President Obama’s African Journey” AC 360 special featuring the interviews Anderson Cooper conducted with President Barack Obama during his trip to Ghana. One line of the President’s stood out as possible fodder for criticism in much the same way Judge Sonia Sotomayor‘s “wise Latina” comment became a conservative talking point.
