Joe the Plumber, aka Samuel Wurzelbacher, is just a regular guy that tells it like it is. That's why when the mainstream media takes quotes like " really screwed up my life" and "I don't owe him s---" out of context, he feels it is his duty to set the record straight. His clarification tour has so far been short, sweet, and just in time for the five congressional primaries he has endorsed a candidate in so far, publishing an opinion piece on Andrew Breitbart's Big Government and making a special appearance on last night's edition of Hannity. Poor John McCain - not even his imaginary friend Joe the Plumber likes him anymore. Joe, who you'll remember is neither named Joe (real name Samuel Wurzelbacher) nor is a plumber, may have thought he could slip some harsh words against the 2008 Republican presidential ticket by the mainstream media, commenting to Pennsylvania Public Radio's Scott Detrow, but the fifteen minutes of fame the McCain campaign gave him seem to be lasting longer than the excitement over a Levi Johnston Playgirl shoot. This is what I get for watching The O'Reilly Factor.

I've found that there are two kinds of people in the world: Those who hate "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer" (like me), and those who don't. I've also found that members of the latter group are really, really amused by it. It is for them that I post Ray Stevens' latest ode to mythological Grandmomicide, "We the People."

Seriously, I know people who laugh at "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer" every single time!

If I didn't know any better, I might think that Stevens is making fun of wingnut opponents of healthcare reform. While the whole thing smacks of self-parody, what I really love is how Stevens warns against the infringin' of our right to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." I guess the operative word here is "our."

Watch and enjoy, if only for the knowledge that opponents of healthcare are being led by a guy who wants to let Joe the Plumber "crunch the numbers."

That may be so, but "grass-roots activist" Wurzelbacher's fifteen minutes haven't run out yet. Proving  just how low the bar is for humor in Washington, DC, Obama economic adviser and campaign flashpoint Austan Goolsbee completely outclassed the competition at the 16th Annual "DC's Funniest Celebrity" contest last night.  His routine was a total lift of Kevin Nealon's "Mr. Subliminal" bit from Saturday Night Live.

Two high-profile stories about the intersection of racism and the Republican Party are exploding all over the internet. The flap over comments at Free Republic and the Young Republicans' election of a new president make for a sour cocktail this weekend. (more...)
