As Occupy Wall Street gains momentum as a global protest movement, many famous faces of the 1% have come out in support of their demands, and, while certainly in more timid fashion than Michael Moore or Russell Simmons, last night actor Sean Penn applauded their efforts in an interview with Piers Morgan– but it was his comments on another movement, the Tea Party, that raised some eyebrows, as he declared he could only see the Tea Party’s goal as, at its core, wanting to “lynch” the President.

Despite having evaded being of any particular relevance in the past couple of decades, Charlie Sheen has somehow become the single most important person in the media. Whether he’s “living a grandiose life” or having a breakdown or being so erratic he’s creeping out other sitcom stars on Twitter, the media have embraced him with open arms (at the expense of, say, crises in Libya and Cote d’Ivoire). But Sheen knows that with great power comes great responsibility, and is taking his spotlight all the way to where people need it the most: Haiti.

Actor/activist Sean Penn seems very suspicious of singer/song-writer Wyclef Jean recently announced plans to run for President of his native country Haiti. Penn told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer “I haven’t seen or heard anything of him in these last six months that I’ve been in Haiti,” and “I’m very suspicious” because Jean had been a “non-presence” while Penn was in Haiti. The only thing weirder than Sean Penn thinking that he knows more about the current plight of Haiti than Wyclef Jean is that he may very well be right!

The O’Reilly Factor’s “Pinheads and Patriots” segment is usually a lighthearted cherry on top of an hour of heated, often tiring debate. It serves as a thoughtless cool-down exercise after an hour of serious thought. Tonight was no different, except there was serious a lack of “Patriot”ism, with Bill O’Reilly leaving the pinhead or patriot denomination for actor Henry Winkler, who had criticized Sarah Palin, up to “the folks,” as he would say.

All the usual sources were furious at Sean Penn when he gave a lengthy interview with Bill Maher in support of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. Hours ago, however, a fellow celebrity joined the fray when Maria Conchita Alonso, the Cuban-American actress and singer wrote a lengthy open letter debating the Oscar-winner’s claims. After Sean Penn told CBS News that critics who question his involvement in the Haiti relief fund should all die “screaming of rectal cancer,” you’d think that the actor would be willing to amend/explain his statement to the press. Not so: When Washington Examiner reporter Tara Palmeri asked Penn about his statement, she was publicly yelled at by Penn, threatened by his publicist C.J. Jordan and removed by police from a gala at the Washington Hebrew Congregation. Palmeri was on Fox’s Red Eye this morning to discuss the incident.

CBS Sunday Morning last weekend actually produced a newsworthy moment that has people talking, when actor/activist Sean Penn discussed with host Lara Logan about those critical of his recent efforts in Haiti to aid those affected by the earthquake. “Do I hope that those people die screaming of rectal cancer? Yeah, you know, but I’m not going to spend a lot of energy on it.” Was he was speaking hyperbolically to make a point? Of course. But does the fact that March is Colorectal Cancer awareness month make it a tad more insensitive?

When the decade began, the gay community was recovering from its unrequited love affair with the Clinton administration and worried about the culture war being waged by religious conservatives. By the end of the decade, the same people were dealing with their unrequited love affair with the Obama administration and, well, you know where this is going. Still, the decade was not without its highlights – we’ve still come a long, long way since 2000. So, on to the gayest moments of the Aughts!

Hugo Chavez, the fiery leftist president of Venezuela, had a run-in with Fox News yesterday in which he called the network confused and “stupid.” It’s hard to come up with a minute-and-a-half soundbite that could be so thoroughly satisfying to both halves of the American electorate, but Chavez managed to do it.
