Al Sharpton Advises Sarah Palin How To Be Taken Seriously: ‘Expand Into Policy’

Video

Despite the chuckles some might have at the idea of Reverend Al Sharpton giving someone advice about how to be taken seriously, while appearing on Morning Joe, Sharpton was humorous and even insightful with some of the wisdom he gave to Sarah Palin. The panel reacted to a new poll showing Palin’s favorability significantly dropping, which prompted Sharpton to recommend that there may be a path back for Palin.

Sharpton suggested, “the challenge is, if she’s going to be serious, she has to do what many of us did, expand that into policy.” Although Palin hasn’t advanced detailed policy proposals, Sharpton thinks Palin should actively advocate for an issue, like he is doing now with education reform. Given that some have recently called Palin “the Al Sharpton of the Republican party,” Sharpton admitted such a comparison probably is not “a compliment to her or me.” Although Sharpton pointed out that one difference between them was that he had to raise grievances because he was always an outsider, but at least until recently, Palin was an insider.

John Heilemann also weighed in and mildly came to Palin’s defense. Heilemann suggested that it wasn’t pleasant to watch many in the Republican establishment pile on Palin and criticize her now, when many are “pompous morons themselves.”

Al is the best for this advice. He definitely knows how to be taken seriously, e.g. starting trouble and total chaos by fabricating or exaggerating the truth (sometimes).

  • Not Your Typical New Yorker

This bag of garbage belongs in prison, take it from a New Yorker who has seen his every move….garbage.

Well, she won’t listen to conservative political consultants or wonks and pundits of all ideological stripes.

    Maybe she’ll listen to a left-wing race-baiting opportunist.

Perhaps she’ll respect advice from a fellow showboat…

HA, it isn’t pleasant too watch? All he needs to do is look across the table to see pompous morons criticizing Palin.

Al Sharpton advising anybody on anything – except, of course how to get rich by being a poverty pimp – is like the President advising anybody on bowling and be tactful about it.

Sarah needs to ignore all this $hit and go play golf,,

Oh, that’s right, Al, YOU coined ‘divide and conqueror’…

I’m sure it was such a hard-sell to convince “insider” politicians and operatives that making factions rather than communities can be an effective political strategy…

Earth to Sharpton! Earth to Sharpton! Can you hear us? Sarah Palin has many policy positions. Repeat, Palin has many policy positions….. Earth to Sharpton!

The reason you don’t know about them is that the media has never covered any of them. They’ve been too busy trying to link her to murders in Arizona, and other smear campaigns. They are afraid of telling people Palin’s perspectives on government spending, individual freedom and fiscal responsibility because they know most people agree with Palin on these matters. So you will never hear coverage of what she says on these matters in the mainstream press.

Any moron can take a position…it takes a real leader to have a PLAN.

“Returning to time tested truths” and “Drill in Alaska” and “less government” do not amount to a plan.

    They are soundbites.

  • Penguin60

Like “change we can believe in”?

  • Color Me Badd

Although I think Al Sharpton is a bit of a race baiter. I have to admit that he did pivot from being an African American activist who wore sweat suits and giant gold medallions and appeared on Morton Downey all the time, into someone who many people now take seriously (I still don’t). Palin has no clue how to make that pivot, and he is so right, the only thing that can save Sarah at this point from being laughed off the public stage, is for her to study policy and get educated, then give a series of serious policy speeches.

If she did that she would shoot right to the top of the 2012 Republican Presidental field. She totally would, people still as polarized as they are about her, would probably warm up to her if she showed she actually understood basics about policy. Fortunately she will never do that, because all the things I have read about her, they all say that she never listens to advice and gets rid of people who aren’t “yes men”. She will never be the nominee and I fully expect her to disappear from the public stage entirely soon.

The “Blood Libel” comments and the tone of that whole Gabrielle Giffords speech was her undoing, but as weird as it is she can still recover from it, but she will never do the things she needs to do in order to recover.

No she doesn’t she has soundbytes. She has never given a serious policy speech at least since the 2008 campaign, but those were McCain policy speeches. I follow Sarah more than most people and always watch or read her speeches. She does not give policy speeches, trust me. She talks in generalities about what we should be doing to get our country back on track, And she is really good at trashing things other people do. But as far a specific policy addresses she doesn’t give them.

Watch any interview with Sarah Palin….the second you press her off of her talking points she gets pissy.

  • HuskersLoveBo

She does not have the intelligence to debate policy. This was clearly demonstrated on the Hannity softball interview after the Giffords’ shooting. Hannity threw her a bone about the crosshairs/cause of the shooting issue. She immediately started regurgitating her rehearsed talking points, lost her train of thought and started rambling on about the deficit. You betcha. People think she has the brains to occupy the White House? She will get killed and boy do I mean killed in a debate because she can not handle a follow up question.

  • mibwilso

I love watching Bill O Reilly interview Sarah Palin.

She gets so indignant because OReilly wont let her just repeat
“Time tested truths,” “less government” and “Drill baby drill” over and over.

  • Color Me Badd

I understand I get “thumbs downs” just because of how awesomely popular I am on this site. But I don’t see how any Sarah Palin supporter can argue with what I said, you have to know at some point she is going to have to really get specific about policy, and she just doesn’t seem to be able to do that. How can you argue with the fact that she comes off as a complete idiot. If she got a good team around her of foreign and domestic policy wonks and gave a series of speeches on policy, and appeared that she was giving a speech because she cared about the future of our country and not about getting a fat speaking fee, she would get the nomination in a landslide. The Republican field has no one right now aside from Sarah who people want to get excited about and pay attention to. Name one damn thing Tim Palenty has done? You can’t.

I know she doesnt, but as weird as it sounds she can learn that stuff (I even think she still can). If she got with some smart and well respected people on the Right who knew policy she could still turn this ship around. Our country loves stupid people who overcome the odds. She could be a hero, dumb woman learns stuff then becomes president. It is such a movie, which is what we want.

I am not an idiot because when I travel to speak in India no one writes an article saying “WTF is Color Me Badd doing giving a speech in India”.

I rattled off a couple of ways that Palin could become relevant, of course she will never take anyone’s advice and at this point is one more idiotic remark away from being completely discredited. With her it is only a matter of time.

She was the VP nominee in 2008 of course she is going to be invited to speak. Honestly I am surprised we don’t see more people asking her to give big speeches. Actually I am not really she is a dolt, but any VP nominee no matter who it is, can spend the rest of their days giving speeches and probably retire on that income alone.

Palin only gives speeches to true believers and on the rare occasions she actually makes a speech to an objective crowd it is all over the news of course, cause she usually gives speeches to her idiot supporters.

It was first published in July 1995 as he was preparing to launch his political career,[1] five years after being elected the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review in 1990.

She will get killed and boy do I mean killed in a debate because she can not handle a follow up question.

yeah like Joey Hair Plugs killed her in 2008 right?

He killed her so bad he ran from any other debates.

Keep telling yourself she’s dumb and you will be even more unhinged than in 2000 when that dummy beat the smartest man in the world….after Bill Clinton.

Think what would happen if the Republicans had Rev. Al for a presidential candidate the way the democrupts did awhile back. Watch out Herman Cain, Allen West, the Weiner/Matthews/fillintherest smear campaign’s gearing up for you. The ‘Crupts don’t like to talk about this.

    See above comment.

    Make up your minds, wingnuts.

You cant say “Obama is not a leader” and “Obama is weak/stupid’ ….and then, at the same time, say “He’s a nanny-state Socialist who’s trying to systematically destroy America”.

You can’t be a weak person with no vision while simultaneously carrying out a diabolical plot to destroy America.

    Which is it, wingnuts?

To clarify for you your Cluelessness:

Obama’s a Union Leader pure and simple. All she has to do is show up. We don’t care if it’s Cheney/Palin in 2012.

But I don’t see how any Sarah Palin supporter can argue with what I said, you have to know at some point she is going to have to really get specific about policy, and she just doesn’t seem to be able to do that.

I can and do. While I don’t think I’ll be looking to her for help with my thermodynamics I don’t think she needs to for me to support her for president. She isn’t exactly being tasked with building reactors. And what of the folks before her? How many of them were truly superior minds?

to be honest…….I can’t think of a president on my life time that I would consider smarter than many of the engineers I work with. Poly Sci isn’t exactly Materials Sci. Or electronics engineering. Or particle physics.

Frankly for me to be in awe of your brain pan…..you have to be able to do things I can’t.

I don’t see that in many of the WORLD’S leaders…..much less our recent presidents.

Shoot, there are kids that have been at my house sniffing around my daughters who would make much of the Washington establishment look downright stupid.

Sorry but I am VERY unimpressed with their intellect.

Bullshit ability? Shoot…..if bullshit was music most would be a philharmonic. that’s their strength…..not critical thinking.

If they were such deep thinkers…..why the hell do they have to defer to so many “experts” to tell them which end is up?

    Sorry.

As to policy…for somebody who claims to be in the know about Palin you seem woefully uninformed on this part.

How can you argue with the fact that she comes off as a complete idiot.

I would probably mirror whatever you made in the way of rebuttal with reference to Obama, Biden, Pelosi, Reid, Hoyer, Weiner, Rangel, the Marines are tipping over Okinawa dude, Cynthia McKinney, Barbara Boxer, I can’t read the bill Conyers, Shelia Jackson Lee and a host of others.

If she got a good team around her of foreign and domestic policy wonks and gave a series of speeches on policy, and appeared that she was giving a speech because she cared about the future of our country and not about getting a fat speaking fee, she would get the nomination in a landslide.

How’d that work for her and Queeg in ’08?

I’ll at least be behind her taking her shot her way.

If she fails….well then we move on and find a new one huh?

BTW, I think taking advice on how to win a campaign from the other side ahsn’t served guys like Dole and McCain all that well . The minute your side and the media love us it is the kiss of death because the person is a weak kneed Dem Lite.

    Pass.

The Republican field has no one right now aside from Sarah who people want to get excited about and pay attention to.

Actually I think that we are simply getting away from letting the left dictate how we should campaign when we announce and who that is.

I am old enough to remember pols actually going to work after their election, not jumping into campaign mode for the next cycle immediately following the first. Perhaps we are more interested in seeing something out of the folks that are there and not pining for who is coming up next?

Haha. When was the last time a Republican president balanced the budget??

Your party hasn’t balanced a budget in ages (except in states where it’s constitutionally mandated).

Spending is no different than giving huge tax cuts…..the country can’t afford EITHER ONE.

That’s false. Every time in the past that tax cuts were employed, the money flowing into the treasury increased significantly due to the resulting increased economic activity. The problem was from Democrats always finding a way to increase the spending to levels higher than the increased revenues, producing the unavoidable increased deficits.

Tax cuts……………always a benefit to America. Spending increase……………………always to our detriment.

Just because tax revenue increases doesn’t mean we have a balanced budget. There has never been an example of a tax cut turning a deficit into a surplus.

BUT, we have plenty of examples to the contrary (see both Reagan and Bush Tax cuts).

Alternatively, Bill Clinton RAISED TAXES and the budget was balanced….and the economy didn’t tank either (despite the dire warnings from Republicans).

It’s been shown that both tax cuts AND government spending have a stimulative effect on the economy.

A targeted temporary increase in government spending, however, is more a more direct way to stimulate the economy because it is a more controlled way to put money into the economy (i.e.- the government hires more people, those people have jobs and can spend money).

A tax cut, on the other hand, DOES stimulate the economy, but in a less direct way. Some people will go out and spend their extra money (which boosts the economy)…but others will save it, (which, while good, doesn’t generate as much economic activity).

  • mibwilso

Personally, I favor a balanced budget amendment.

The government should only be allowed to run a deficit in cases of extreme economic or military emergency…in which case, Congress should have to approve waiving the amendment with at least a 3/5 majority.

Check out the facts. Under Republican leadership, Congress has run a surplus. The entire Federal debt can be traced back to Democrat-controlled Congresses.
