Maher’s Anti-Obama GOP Candidate: “Fat, White, Small-Eared Idiot” Karab Amabo

video

Bill Maher doesn’t think Republicans are interested in doing much but opposing President Barack Obama at every turn, and with that in mind, on Real Time he devised a 2012 presidential candidate he said would be a perfect fit for the party in its current state. Why? The candidate is the exact opposite of Obama in every way but gender, right down to his name…Karab Amabo.

One complaint we often have about Real Time is that even though Maher’s a comedian, it’s not uncommon for us not to find the show that funny. The segment you’ll see below, however, is a different story, with Maher struggling to get through many of the absurd differences between Obama and Amabo without laughing. Amabo, you see, is a “fat, white, small-eared idiot” who “carries only one form of ID: his original birth certificate.” Another Amabo staple: doing away with Obama’s stoicism.

“At the first sign of crisis, Amabo will pray, scream, shit his pants, and fly Air Force One into a mountain.”

Amabo is really into praying, considering another defining trait is that he and his family “go to church every four hours.” We also enjoyed the Idiocracy-like touch of “a meth lab where the White House garden used to be”…oh, and get ready for Susan Boyle to factor into this somehow, too. Video, via HBO, below.

When and how did Maher go from being a libertarian to being an obot liberal? Just like when and how did Arianna go from being a conservative to being a liberal? Why do they never explain their epiphanies? And as far as Maher being funny, hyper-partisanship isn’t all that funny; it’s sledgehammer humor.

I always preferred Carlin. He was an equal opportunity basher who had nothing but disdain for politians, no matter their party label. He was a true iconoclast whereas Maher is a shill.

  • slickerwick

I also have to add that Maher’s segment about the GOP is pretty ugly and over-the-top. He might want to keep in mind that’s he’s insulting about half the population of this country, not good for increasing his viewership. More subtlety would help.

You know, if that caricature he used were any one but a white man, it would be considered highly stereotypical and racist. It’s certainly classist. What he’s saying is that all republicans are fat, stupid hillbillies. There used to be a time when the Dems were on the side of the working class and the rural folk. Remember Woody Guthrie? And they wonder why they’ve lost the white working class vote? This Maher segment is a perfect example of why.

You guys are missing the point. It targets guys like Newt who automatically switch to be opposite the President no matter if they flip flop. It’s not about all Republicans.

Sort of like the numerous flip-flops of Maher’s messiah, Obama.

Now that I think of it, that’s pretty ironic. Maher, the fervent atheist, has made anti-Republicanism his religion and now worships at the shrine of Obama.

Slicker, my bet is that Dems [who are a pronounced 2-to-1 minority nationwide] probably outnumber Republican subscribers to HBO by perhaps a 2-to-1 margin. Just guessing. Does anyone have any numbers at all?

This was not one of Maher’s funniest bits, despite his trouble avoiding breaking up. Often his sendups are so sharp you can cut yourself on the edge.

And as to whether he’s morphed from a libertarian to a democrat, I’m not sure that’s true. I’d characterize him — consistently — as a classicliberal who’s 1) fed up with the pieties mouthed by politicians on both the left and the right (although mostly on the right) and 2) finds Republicans more preposterous (and hence easier to mock) than Democrats.

Listening to Maher, you need to remember that he’s not really a political commentator, but instead a comic of the “professional vulgarian” variety.

Basically, Maher blames conservatives for the cancellation of Politically Incorrect. It’s hard not to notice that he’s got a huge soft spot for a lot of the left’s most hated people who happened to be frequent guests on the show like Ann Coulter and especially Christine O’Donnell, who is the embodiment of everything that Maher rants and raves about. Everyone else, he’s willing to tar with a brush that’s even huger than his nose. The guy has devolved into an absolute partisan hack, and there is nothing thoughtful that ever comes out of his mouth anymore. I really do think that at this point, HBO could replace Real Time with a 60 minute tape loop of Maher saying “F*ck Republicans, they’re stupid” without losing any significant part of his audience.

Don’t forget that Karab is a non-smoker, too, and that he doesn’t FAIL when it comes to his NCAA picks! Let’s be completely clear about the distinctions here!

I am glad that Obamo smokes. Eventually it’ll have the desired effect.

  • TfT

Comedy? From the hater? Please, Maher isn’t funny anymore. He supports war now since hehimself has committed us to Libya….just like Rachel Maddow supports war now. WHat is funny is that mediaite apparently puts this nasty man up on a pedestal, for some odd reason.

Bill is a creep and getting creepier every day. He sees the writing on the wall and doesn’t like it, so he will smear, slander, complain, bitch and moan, groan, and claim comedy.

    pathetic human being.

  • http://www.obesitywars.net/ Klaatu

The character that Maher used to portray Karab Amabo looks just like Rush Limbaugh. I had to enlarge my screen resolution just to make sure that it wasn’t. Mr. Limbaugh has been relentlessly critical of Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” initiative to reduce childhood obesity in America. The Fast Food Explorer nutritional website has created a “Obesity Wars” blog to cover this tummultuous disagreement. We’ve also created a search function, on the Explorer site, called the “Cardio Search”. Michelle approved fast food items are returned in the “left” label (green), Limbaugh approved fast food items are returned in the “right” label (red).

Republicans might not like our comparitive methodology, but it’s only reflecting the truth about Mr.Limbaugh’s position on childhood obesity. Like it, or not, GOP, 2012 is going to be framed as the battle between the party that believes in a government that wants healthy children, against the party that thinks that children have the constitutional right to be as morbidly obese as they choose to be – without the “nanny state” telling them how many calories are in their Big Mac!

Mr. Limbaugh drew the line in the sand, he should not be surprised when Bill Maher, and the rest of liberal America, kick sand at the “world’s most famous man dumpling”.

Are you 1) serious; 2) being facetious; or 3) terminally obtuse? Maher is pointedly and surgically dissecting the Republican singlemindedness as Republicans like Haley Barbour, John Boehner and Rush Limbaugh all line up with Farrakhan and against America. Unlikely allies to say the least, it just goes to prove that for Republicans ‘the enemy of my enemy is my friend” as they oppose Obama.

Maher has given his audience a small glipse behing the curtain, as to how he really feels.

The name he has chosen for his ficticious Chris Christie character really says it all.

Obama’s backward ideology and way of thinking, just like Maher’s, makes them both losers with a capitol L.

Also, just like Obama, Maher unrelentingly projects ( transfers ) his own shortcomings & failings onto others ( Republicans, Tea Party, real Americans ) simply because neither is man enough to accept that the problem lies whithin themselves.

Unfortunately, as a result of their leadership, this cancer like phenomenon has gone viral throughout the liberal minded individuals of this country, seriously threatening to destroy her from within.

The American Left is now just buffoonery and clowning. They can’t deal with the real criticisms of Obama’s failed administration — out-of-control deficits, broken budgeting process, incoherent foreign policy — so they prefer to invent a joke opponent.

But the real laughingstock here is the Obama-Pelosi-Reid agenda of:

    Spend money you don’t have
    On bills you don’t read
    For programs that don’t work

And the Left doesn’t even try to address that huge elephant in the room. Which will lead to an elephant in the White House in 2012.

Being against everything Obimbo is for, is wrong? I thought that was just the use of good common sense. The exact opposite of Obimbo would, be a person of integrity, character, knowledge of foreign, and domestic policy, and an innate ability to make decisions. A person who would find it impertinent to be playing basketball, or running out of the country every time a hard decision has to be made. Actually though, if you think about it, the person Maher is describing is more suited for the job than “I don’t need no stinking birth certificate” Obimbo!

The very country that Michelle 0bama could not be proud of:

When Ayn Rand immigrated to the United States, she embraced the United States whole-heartedly. Ayn Rand was a great admirer of the founding fathers and always said, proudly, that she was not an American by birth, but by choice.

This woman is the anti-liberal, and the anti-Maher, and the ultimate anti-0bama. She wrote:

I can say — not as a patriotic bromide, but with full knowledge of the necessary metaphysical, epistemological, ethical, political and esthetic roots — that the United States of America is the greatest, the noblest and, in its original founding principles, the only moral country in the history of the world.

    And sadly:

Toward the end of her later life, however, Ayn Rand became disillusioned with the society and culture in which she was living. She didn’t hear anybody defending America; she didn’t hear anybody fighting for America ‘s ideals — as the country seemed to be slipping deeper into a real version of Atlas Shrugged.

    Snowpet’s utopia:

From each according to his ability, to each according to his need (or needs) is a slogan popularized by Karl Marx in his 1875 Critique of the Gotha Program.[1] The phrase summarizes the principles that, in a communist society, every person should contribute to society to the best of his or her ability and consume from society in proportion to his or her needs. In the Marxist view, such an arrangement will be made possible by the abundance of goods and services that a developed communist society will produce; the idea is that there will be enough to satisfy everyone’s needs.

Hey snowpet, after everything is “free” you can never take it back:

After blitz of the Ritz, it’s the siege of Fortnum & Mason: Anarchists hijack the anti-cuts demo and go on rampage in central London.

    Nice…Isn’t socialism great???

Earlier, around 500,000 activists and campaigners descended on London this morning to protest at the Government’s drastic cuts programme.

But while the main march and rally in Hyde Park, which was addressed by Labour leader Ed Miliband, remained peaceful, splinter groups of anarchists went wild.

Hundreds of activists – many wearing masks and hoods – disrupted traffic, set off fireworks and flares in the busiest areas of the city including Piccadilly Circus, Oxford Street and Regent Street.

Lightbulbs filled with ammonia and paintbombs were thrown at police as they desperately tried to keep the peace.

Topshop and HSBC had their windows smashed, while paint and glass bottles were thrown at a Royal Bank of Scotland branch. The marauders also attacked The Ritz near Green Park, where they smashed windows with bins and road signs.

UK Uncut, an anti-cuts direct action group, later occupied the Fortnum & Mason store in Piccadilly, claiming the firm had ‘dodged’ paying taxes.

Nine arrests were made and some police officers were injured.

This satire by Maher is nothing short of brilliant. If it wasn’t, there would be no need for conservatives to be in here trying to convince everyone that it isn’t.

Here’s why it’s brilliant. The coming 2012 election is about the ideological divide in America by two groups that think that they love “their” country. One side, thinks that gluttony and sloth is a bad thing, and that the gap between the rich and poor should be reasonable. The other side, thinks that gluttony and sloth, and a tremendous (read that infinite) gap, between the rich and the poor, is a God given right that is also guaranteed by the Constitution.

Maher has brilliantly nailed the 2012 argument. The conservative, Ayn Rand bots, want the right to be obese, unhealthy, and tremendously/infinitely rich. What makes it all so tragically funny, is the absurdity ot its consequences.

If conservatives win, America ends up becoming the “United States of Gluttony and Sloth”, the nation of rich, and poor, human dumplings.

How cool will that be, America?

Gee, strawman much? We’ve never implied such a thing, at either the Fast Food Explorer nutrition site, or the Obesity Wars blog.

As a population, obesity levels are probably (just guessing) equally split down party lines. What we are implying, and this is FACT, is that ideologically, the two great political parties, of America, have a different strategy for dealing with childhood obesity in this country. Michelle Obama and the Democratic party have a sane strategy. Rush Limbaugh and his GOP have a strategy that is, well . . .

Let’s face it, Triple Whoppers with Cheese in every school cafeteria, a “Let’s Not Move” message to the youth of America, and a 400lb President to lead by example, seems a bit on the insane side to us. “Hey Billy, let’s grow up to be like the President!” Good plan.

And, as far as most of our comments being related to the subject of the GOP meme that obesity and unhealthiness are a “freedom” for all Americans, it’s called “staying on topic”. It’s one of the predominant themes of Maher’s brilliantly satirical monologue. Add to that, that the Fast Food Explorer is designed to help America’s youth avoid obesity, and it’s also our “business”.

Actually, there’s only one blog, and it’s only been live about two weeks. And, for being so “lame”, the Obesity Wars blog sure got under Mr.Limbaugh’s skin in a hurry.

As for the Fast Food Explorer, it’s not a blog, it’s a nutritional database designed to help America’s children make informed decisions when ordering fast food. If, that is, they would like to avoid obesity and the medical complications associated with it. We need no promotion. Our traffic taxes our host’s server, as it is. Any more, and we’d just have to move it to a dedicated server.

We will, when commenting on articles like this, continue to use our new Cardio Search to point out the divide between Michelle Obama and the Democratic Party’s strategy to reduce childhood obesity in America, and Rush Limbaugh and the Republican Party’s strategy to reduce childhood obesity in America, because, quite frankly, it rocks! And, additionally, it’s the perfect, precise, laser-like way to demonstrate the absurdity of Mr. Limbaugh and the GOP’s position.

I think I remember playing Obesity Wars on the Atari 2600.

Anyway, what’s with all this “we” stuff? Is it like the royal “we”, or is your account used by more than one person? I was going to accuse you of lying earlier, but it seems you’re unaware that someone posting under your name made the risible assertion in a previous post that the 2012 election will be decided on the basis of food policy. You might want to consider changing the password to lock that individual out, as he/she makes all of “you” look silly.

If you’re going to call that paragraph a “strawman” argument, as it relates to the subject of an obese presidential candidate, promoting unbound, unregulated, unsafe, uninformed consummerism, it would be just peachy if you would try to explain why. Otherwise, it just comes off precisely as Maher suggests at the start of the video.

They call it the editorial “we”. One of the perks of signing the checks. It allows me to speak for everyone at the Explorer. WE, are going to guess that you’re referring to this earlier statement.

“Like it, or not, GOP, 2012 is going to be framed as the battle between the party that believes in a government that wants healthy children, against the party that thinks that children have the constitutional right to be as morbidly obese as they choose to be – without the “nanny state” telling them how many calories are in their Big Mac!”

Nowhere in that statement does it infer that “the 2012 election will be decided on the basis of food policy”. It infers, correctly so, that food policy is a microcosm of the Liberal vs Conservative political ideology, and that it will be a major component in the framing of the 2012 election. WE stand by it.

“Consummerism”… “characature”… are you _sure_ you’re an editor? At any rate, I think the Democrats’ welfarism has contributed far more to sloth and gluttony than whatever it is the GOP did to put such a bee in your bonnet. Something about wanting to force feed triple cheeseburgers to infants, I gather… it’s a little hard to suss out.

I’m not sure what’s so unbelievable about that. Lots of libertarians hate the Democrats even more than they do the Republicans. While the Republican Party has more than their fair share of busybodies, the Dems take the low sodium, transfat free cake.

“Hope” doesn’t get you very far when it comes to avoiding obesity. Governor Christie almost certainly hopes that his friend, Rush Limbaugh, is right, and that the parents of America will, all of a sudden, get their act together, without the aid of the “frickin’ nanny state”, and cure childhood obesity in America. Well, Mr. Christie, Mr. Romney, Mr. Pawlenty, Mrs. Palin, et al, can hope all they want. Those parents, without a “push” from a governed society, will never in a million years, steer children into making the “right choices”. The First Lady’s “Let’s Move” initiative is the only path that will ever make a dent in this crisis.

    And it is a “crisis”.

Where is America’s military going to get recruits, 30 years from now, if they, the military, are already calling the obesity problem, with potential recruits, a “crisis” now?

A spelling nazi, eh? Consummerism was a typo, characature was just a bad self edit. I started to phrase it “characterization”, backed up, to change it to caricature, and flubbed it. Busted, I’m so ashamed. And, just for the sake of clarity, I never said I was an editor, I said that I was using the editorial “we”.

Well, since we know that even the Founding Fathers misspelled words, ocassionally, and that Einstein said this about the English language, “I cannot write in english, because of the treacherous spelling . . .”, I’ll consider myself in good company.

Again with the strawman. We never said one thing about “force feeding”. But if Limbaugh’s GOP gets its way, those Triple Cheeseburgers, with super sized fries, and a super sized Coke, would be available in every school room cafeteria, in America, super sizing our children. And yes, we do have a “bee in our bonnet” trying to suss that concept.

I agree that parenting is a big part of the issue, but as I said before, welfarism plays a huge role here. As the welfare state flourished, so did the number of single-parent and no-parent homes, which should be no surprise to anyone since if you subsidize something, you’ll only get more of it. Now in many communities the very culture of the family has been utterly destroyed. Poverty and broken homes go hand in hand, and obesity is nowadays a trait of the poor, not the wealthy as it was in the past, so you do the math. Nannying got us in the mess, so you’ll have to excuse my skepticism toward the idea that more nannying will get us out of it.

Obesity isn’t just about will power. It’s economics. A block of Velveeta the size of a car battery is cheaper than a small pack of non-fat cheese. One tomato costs as much as a bag of candy. A Lean Cuisine frozen dinner costs three times as much as a cheap, fat-loaded TV dinner. If you’re really going to attack obesity, you need to start with that.

That could only happen because of the un-Constitutional federal take-over of the education system that the anti-American Left perpetrated against this nation.

Agreed, but can’t people just understand and learn that maybe they should choose an apple or banana over a bag of chips and soda. Eating off the dollar menu at fast food joints can be cheap, but somewhere in your head you ought to understand how bad it is.
I think I read somewhere that our taste buds actually get programed a little too, for salt, sweet, and fat. We need to reprogram. and on that note, I’ll haul my fat butt away from the computer ……

True, Cosmos. But when getting a week’s worth of groceries, the car battery sized block of Velveeta stretches much further than the six slices of non-fat cheese. Rich people like Maher can afford to buy the higher priced healthy foods. Which is fortunate, since just keeping his nose nourished must cost a fortune.

Fast food is cheap, processed food is cheap, so it’s perfectly understandable that “the poor” make up the largest portion of its consumer base. But, your blaming that, on the “nanny state” is straight out of Limbaugh’s playbook. “Let’s Move” and the President’s Hunger-free Kids Act is designed to reduce the consumption of subsidized foods by school children, and the First Lady isn’t telling anyone what they can or can’t eat. “Let’s Move” is about what foods are being made available to children, during the school day, and educating those children about what makes a human morbidly obese. So, basically, your argument has more holes than subsidized swiss cheese.

It’s amazing that conservatives can’t quite get their arms around that concept. Don’t they get it? Don’t they wonder why there are no successful conservative satirists with a live audience? They don’t have enough “truth”, in their material, to make good satire. It almost always falls short. Listen to Beck’s “comedy” attempt at satire on TV. You’ll hear plenty of applause from his audience, but not much laughter. When you do, it seems forced and feigned.

Actually, the claim was 80 pounds in 21 weeks, which is almost five months. But that’s still, according to science, impossible without drugs or exercise, on a 1500 calorie per day diet. When Mr. Limbaugh eventually announced that the weight loss was taking place (it was starting to be obvious) he tried to cover the tracks of what he had really done, by moving the “start date” of his weight loss, He goofed by pushing that date forward instead of backwards. His being “science challenged”, came back to bite him on the butt.

And who would even care about hurting Limbaugh’s feelings. Hell, he does that full time to poor people who are poor, less fortunate and everything else. I always thought Rush was kinda funny but what really turned me on him was when he encouraged his listeners to call up food banks for the poor and play crank phone calls on their staff. And I heard the whole thing. What type of sick s.o.b. would even think of that. Entertainment, comedy whatever is one thing. That is total crap because you know all his dittohead sheep will do that for real… man I was pissed.

Glenn, if the answer was a snake, it would bite you. If you want the absolute, definitive answer, you’ll have to do a little more research on rapid weight loss solutions, and what can be accomplished, and covered up, with only a week long absense from work. It’s really a piece of cake, and obvious, with some research. Gastric-bipass is out, because the recovery time is more than a week. Think about it, the answer is a few Google searches away.

That whole viagra episode is a little too speculative for us. Plus, it’s a little too far removed from anything presented in the Maher monologue. We’re trying to stay on topic. Limbaugh’s Dominican Republic Adventures, no matter how debaucherous they may have been, will have zero impact on the 2012 election. Not so, with his “It’s not a ruse!” phony baloney obesity solution. A solution to childhood obesity is on the front burner of American politics, and the expertise, of the “sheppard” of the GOP, must be examined closely. Is Limbaugh’s criticism of the First Lady’s “Let’s Move” initiative, and his suggesting that Michelle is too overweight to lead that initiative, coming from a “credible” expert? The answer is an obvious, no!

I didn’t want a definitive answer. Just an answer for my own curiousity.

We don’t mean to make this so difficult, but because there’s no hard evidense, we’re not going to put anything in print that states the obvous and could lead to litigation. Let’s try this, with a little dose of obtuseness. Rush has been researching weight loss and attempting weight loss all his life, right? So, he should know pretty much all there is to know about everything “weight loss”, right?

One time, just after the weight loss was over, a caller, discussing the obesity epidemic, brought up bariatric surgeries and, eventually, mentioned the Lap-band procedure. Interjecting, Rush says, “How do those things work, anyways? They just make it so you don’t want to eat as much?” If you believe that Limbaugh is that ignorant of the Lap-band surgical process, I’ve got a bridge . . .

Lol, I remember that exact conversation too between him and the listener. By that time I already knew is was something like that. Thanks… Did you check out the Dept. of Homeland Security report on elRushbo?

  • glenn113

And as we speak we can thank ElRushbo for the “operation chaos” thing he started in 2008. MoveOn.org is in the works of doing the same operation chaos for Michele Bachman. Thanks Rush.

  • glenn113

You know what though. Limbaugh’s dittoheads are going to believe him no matter what and we won’t change their vote. 99% of everyone else knows he is a gasbag. So he honestly has no influence on an election except for his “Operation Chaos”. haha

Unfortunately, what he does have, is the sheppard’s staff that herds the sheepish GOP legislators. If Rush says that the government should not be involved in rediucing childhood obesity, because it’s bad for Mr. Big, then the GOPsters will unite and say “Yes, Maha Rushie. Your wish, is our command.”

Otherwise, they might have to apologise to Rush the next day.

They also might have to “apologize”. I spotted it as I was hitting the comment button. Just trying to stay one step ahead of the you-know-who spelling Nazi, folks. It’s his favorite, and strongest argument..

Funny how you lefty’s get into your vortex of hate over conservatives. Well,, I guess it isn’t that funny, but rather pathetic.

And, the Rush Limbaugh led GOP shows nothing but “love” for liberal American patriots? Is that about right, Alz? Oh, wait, doesn’t your Maha Rushie refers to patriotic liberal Americans as “libs”, that also just happen to be “evil”, “godless”, “cockroaches” and “parasites”, for 15 hours a week, 52 weeks per year? It would seem that you have things exactly reversed, Alz. Do you see “lefties” making “cons” a dirty ephithet? You’re doing exactly what your Pied Piper does. It’s called Freudian projection.

    @ Klaatu,

I see what you mean. I just perused the entire thread, and you’re absolutely right. The hook is baited. Can you spot it?

It took a couple of reads, but yeah, that ought to work. Now remember what I said Gort, play nice, and don’t do anything silly, like destroying the Earth, unless I give the word.

Sarah Palin said this back on Thursday…

“Upon my return from an outstanding and productive trip to India and Israel, I’ve been inundated with requests to respond to petty comments made in the media the past few days, including one little fella’s comment which decent people would find degrading. (I won’t bother responding to it though, because it was made by he who reminds me of an annoying little mosquito found zipped up in your tent; he can’t do any harm, but buzzes around annoyingly until it’s time to give him the proverbial slap.)”

The title of Sarah’s Facebook piece was “Lamestream Media: Reload or White Flag?” That has to be one of the most confusing arguments about responding to media criticism, that I have ever read. Read in toto, it’s as if she was saying, “I’m reloading against the ‘lamestream media’ with a white flag!” Say what?

I think a good patriotic, liberal American, Jeffersonian prayer is in order.

Dear Gaia (nature’s god), Could you please provide some weather events that would cause Sarah Palin to want to move to Washington D.C., so she can live in the White House? We would be most grateful if you could help us get her on the Republican ticket again. Amen

“liberal American patriots”. That’s an interesting combination of words these days. Today’s “liberal”, which I refer to as Modern Liberal/Progressive” hates Western Civilization and normal American values.

People NEED to point this out.

I am a proud, patriotic, “Modern Liberal/Progressive” American, and I LOVE “Western Civilization and normal American values”. And, all of my proud, patriotic, “Modern Liberal/Progressive” American friends LOVE “Western Civilization and normal American values” too. So, I just have to ask. Where in the world did you come up with such a silly and ridiculous notion?

Then maybe start subscribing to Western values – which I call “Democratic Capitalism based on a Moral Foundation.” When you start supporting all of the components with vigor, then you can say you love our system.

You sound like Obama who says he wants to change everything. If one loves something so much, under what circumstances would they push for fundamental change? The answer is they really don’t love it.

Not that you were addressing me, but do you think that the United States and the Europe of 2100 will hold Western Civilization in such high esteem? I don’t. Their preferred philosopher will be Frantz Fannon and Malcolm X, not Thomas Jefferson and Voltaire.

The primary Founding Fathers were Deists. They knew that the Constitution was imperfect, and that it would need to be changed and improved over time. At times, they knew, those changes would even have to be “fundamental” – like the abolishment of slavery. Does that mean that they lacked a moral foundation?

Thomas Jefferson and Voltaire are two of my favorite heroes. I would like to see more coverage of Jefferson and Voltaire in America’s educational history books. The Republicans, on the other hand, are doing their darndest to get those two out of the history books (see the Texas Board of Education run amok). Fannon was a Maxist, and Malcolm X was an Islamist. Most liberal/progressive Americans, like myself, are not big believers in either of those two philosophies. Your argument doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. The logic seems extremely flawed.

Listen, we’re in agreement about Voltaire and Jefferson. However, if you are familiar with much of the ideology that has gained currency among the intellectual elite of the left–marxists historians, anti-colonialists, third-world studies, black liberation theologians et al.–then you have to be aware of how they think about Western Civilization. To quote Jesse Jackson in a protest at Standford University: “Hey, Hey, Ho, Ho! Western Culture’s Got to Go!” (repeat)

My point is that this is the trend. The heroes of Western Civilization are seen, for the most part, by the left as villains and hypocrites.

There are certainly some that would argue that some of the Founders were hypocritical for signing a document that said “all men are created equal” and then continued to own slaves. You don’t think that that’s a fair argument, that they were at least a tad hypocritical on that particular issue? “Villains”? Nah, can’t buy it. I don’t think that the average patriotic, liberal American thinks of the Founders as villains. That would imply that they, liberal/progressives, wish that the Founders had not won the American Revolution, and that the British had prevailed. It’s a ridiculous assertion when you think about it in those terms. I don’t like tea and crumpets, the Founders are my heroes, flaws and all. Paine, Jefferson, Hamilton, Madison, are you kidding? I get goose bumps when I read their brilliant words. The Federalist Papers were some of the most clever and brilliant writing ever put to paper. We would not be a “United States of America” without those four. Remove any one of them from our history, and Americans would likely be speaking with a British accent.

Man, Maher can get conservatives foaming at the mouth in less time than you can say “Palin is a twat”.
