Casey Anthony Lawyer Uses Platform To Oppose Death Penalty: ‘Today I Saved A Life’

video

Following today’s verdict that found Casey Anthony not guilty of first degree murder, child abuse or manslaughter, Anthony’s Defense Attorney Jose Baez spoke to the press outside of the Florida courthouse. He thanked his legal team, praised his “adversaries” in the Prosecution, and decried a media he felt convicted his client before her day in court. He also, however, used the moment to speak out against the death penalty, asking why the country still sees fit to “kill its own citizens.”

“I think that this case is a perfect example of why the death penalty does not work and why we all need to stop and look and think twice about a country that decides to kill its own citizens. Murder’s not right no matter who does it, whether its a ritual killing or someone becoming a victim in a drive by shooting. It’s disgusting and I think, if this case gets any attention, it should focus on that issue, that we need to stop trying to kill our own people.”

Baez ended by saying that he was happy to be able to tell his daughter that he “saved a life” today.

Watch the video from CNN below. The death penalty comments begin around the 4:20 point.

The fact that innocent people have been executed should give even those who defend the death penalty pause.

At best, DNA evidence should be a requirement to put someone to death. Eyewitnesses are notoriously unreliable.

I can’t imagine anything worse than being innocent and being put to death by my own government.

I’m curious to hear the arguments to the contrary, especially since the death penalty is proven to be more expensive than life in prison.

asking why the country still sees fit to “kill its own citizens.”

Because some crimes are so heinous the perpetrator deserves the death penalty. For an example Mr. Baez, look no further then your client.

  • Tedderman

Jose Baez proved, as an attorney, it’s better to be lucky than good.

Jose Baez, make sure you pay your child support on time.Member,it takes 2 to bake a cake.

I can’t tell if Casey Anthony is guilty. Realize there are quite a few people who believe she is. I think the jurors realizing it was a death penalty case erred on the side of caution. Of course there was the option of life in prison without parole too. Obviously Azarkhan thinks she murdered her daughter. Azarkhan is far from the only one.
I think what happened was the jurors thought they could not grant a guilty verdict unless , repeat unless they felt they were absolutely certain, ie sans doubt. I suppose Jose Baez was successful in planting that seed of doubt.

Agree on the first part. But on the second, I suspect you wouldn’t literally bet your life that she did it. That seems like a reasonable standard for the death penalty. “Would you be willing to subject yourself to the death penalty if it turns out you’re wrong?” Which is why DNA evidence should be a requirement.

  • 2012freedom

Heinous people who commit heinous crimes need to be put to death. It is not up to us to give them their final judgement it is just up to us to arrange the meeting.

  • timzank

“Baez ended by saying that he was happy to be able to tell his daughter that he “saved a life” today.”

Well, at least your daughter is alive Jose, but wait until she’s old enough to comprehend what you really did and see how she looks at you then.

Maybe Casey & Jose will join with the OJ folks and keep searching for the “real” killer now, eh?

She’ll be out by Friday and on the dance floor at “The Club” by Saturday night. Bank on it.

Ummmmmm most of those studies that showed the DP is more expense than LWOP are flawed studies. For example, they don’t include long term care for inmates, medications, outside doctor’s visits and hospital stays .Remember, states have to pay money to get doctors and hospitals to treat inmates.

  • jo hoochie

She can now kill again!!! Jury was oh so wrong. I agree no death penalty but for this slut to get and have children, party, make money on books or a movie, have a life, when her beautiful daughter will never have one is so WRONG!!!! Hopefully NO ONE will give her the time of day and if they do they better keep a close eye on what she is doing.

  • printbrat

I hope a family member slaps her with a civil suit for wrongful death…maybe the father’s family can finally come out. We can not allow her to profit from this any further.

  • btimsah

I typically support the death penalty.

But Judge Napolitano once said; The Federal Government should not be able to do anything that you cannot do. Therefore the death penalty is wrong and immoral.

But then I thought, well I cannot imprison someone but we give government that right to punish people for their acts of violence against another persons rights with forced imprisonment.

I still think Casey Anthony should have gotten SOMETHING, at least child neglect and/or endangerment.

Oh, did yall hear the news?

Party this Friday at Casey Anthony’s house. That cold bitch.

  • Nature Freak

To roughly paraphrase Freud, A questionable verdict is sometimes just a questionable verdict. I think Casey is guilty myself. She is damn lucky. Maybe some would feel more comfortable in going to Orange County and having a good old fashion lynching (sarc). Put your money where your mouth is all you armchair analysists.

This was the verdict. Deal with it people. Justice has been legally served. Her defense attorney did his job. That is the American way.

BTW, Nancy Grace is of the lowest form of bottom feeders. I really do not understand how she made it this far in the professional world. Being shameless and annoying is apparently the way to climb the latter.

  • andie

I think this is largely why the prosecution lost their case. Many people do not believe in the death penalty, so when you seek the death penalty you need to have an iron clad case. I won’t blame the jury for that! But I will blame the jury for not charging this woman with CHILD ABUSE. IT’S BEEN THREE YEARS AND THIS MOTHER HAS YET TO PICK UP THE TELEPHONE, DIAL 911 AND SAY, “MY DAUGHTER IS MISSING”.

But the unfit woman has plenty of time to party. WILL NOT BE A SUPPORTER OF THE MOVIE OR BOOK DEAL. WILL NOT REWARD OR AVENGE THE MURDER OF AN INNOCENT BABY.

  • Just my Opinion

That asshole Baez gives Lawyer a bad name!

I believe the death penalty should be issued only if the evidence is 100% irrefutable. I haven’t been following this case so I don’t have all the facts, but if I remember correctly the prosecution was trying to push the story that Casey chloroformed and duct taped her daughter, resulting in death by suffocation. Of course there is no proof to this accusation. The car trunk where they found some hair from the daughter tested negative for chloroform and no DNA from the mother was found.
When the remains of the child was found, all that was left was bone. Again, no chloroform, duct tape residue or DNA from the mother was found.
The lack of evdience should of told the prosecution that pushing for the death penalty wouldn’t be a good idea. No jury is going to send somebody to their death without any real proof to back it up. They should of pushed for the maximum penalty for incometence resulting in the death of a child.

It dosen’t have to be. A 22. cal to the back of the head is cheap and painless. Also it’s much more humane than death by electrocution or gas.

  • Yoda002

I don’t think she should of got the death penalty, but I think she is guilty. Casey will be able to make some serious money.

You were doing fine untill the last sentence. No one should be put to death, even jailed, unless convicted beyond a reasonable doubt. But here at the end you invoke “price,” and thats nonsense. Decades in jail cost millions and couple of bullets cost a couple of bucks. Give me a break.

The fact of the matter is that, today..Casey Anthony was tried and found NOT GUILTY by a jury of her peers…come to peace with it folks….anger and hatred will only eat away at you. It scares me that I seem to live in a ‘Lynch mob society” God forbid anyone of you ever do anything wrong and find yourselves in her position.

  • Tedderman

The child was only missing one month before the g-mother, Cindy Anthony reported her missing. And there’s no proof that Casey Anthony is guilty of child abuse. However, My belief is that Casey used chloroform in an attempt to anesthetize the child, then she taped her across her mouth in the event she woke up before Casey got home from a night out. Sadly, when she finally arrived home she realized the child had perished, and that’s when the “Zannie the nanny lies” began. This is merely my own theory and I have no personal knowledge of the actual events which led to the death of Caylee Anthony. Unfortunately, I think the jury arrived at the same conclusion.

But the jury didn’t reach that conclusion because they came back with non-guilty in the child endangerment verdict.

I also think that’s what may have happened. I didn’t pay attention to the jury instructions on child abuse, but I would think using chloroform to anesthetize a child and covering her mouth with duct tape would qualify. It does seem, however, that the prosecution didn’t prove that’s what happened.

Dislike what I have to say all you like…and if you really, really want to spread your anger and hate around…don’t spew it in the direction of Casey Anthony or Jose Baez…aim it toward the state of Florida Prosecuting Attorneys office…who didn’t get the job done.

I cannot believe Caylee didn’t get justice today or at all. I strongly feel that this has a bloody hand in this case someone is payed or being served to keep this case under the table causing Casey to go free.

  • Browningrage

She got away with murder, plain and simple… In my opinion, the accused HAS TO DEFNED THEMSELVES on the stand- this no testifying on their own behalf is asinine… Defendants should have to do just that, defend themselves against their accusers…

  • sisterlove

I cannot believe that the jurors and all those saying Casey deserved it by being free- cannot believe that her FACE – DEMEANOR and BODY LANGUAGE all points to a careless and murderous attitude. She might have cared for her daughter around her family at home its called “pretending” but when she had to have her on her custody or side she would do her mistreatment look at Caylee’s eyes in all the pictures all have bags and black circles for her being so young what did that Casey do to that child when no one was around if she eventually killed her because no one else did.

  • jo hoochie

Maybe Baez will give her a room at his house and then she can babysit his little girl?? He might also need someone to handle his finances.

  • azgrandma

hey baez – you saved a scumbag that does not deserve to live. she brought her beautiful, TOTALLY INNOCENT little girl’s life to a brutal end.

  • http://justplaythegame.us JustPlayTheGame

I am really surprised the MEDIA didn’t get this girl hung.. Although she had to be guilty in something, fortunately our system still works and you must have proof “without doubt” on guilty. Blame the Media and the Police for not doing their jobs..one should have been silent and one should have found proof.

  • sisterlove

I say Loudly for all who believe that Casey is innocent – not guilty and that justice is served please get her phone number or address so that when you need your child or elderly family to be babysitted or cared for (those that cannot help or defend themselves) please call her for caring and then let us know when they are dead or not found for 31 days or reason for death under care. Lets see then how you would feel or simply grateful for Casey for getting rid of your family we have just raised and created the death ” casey as doctor kavorkian” now that he is dead she will take his place so if you need death or you would like to end your life call “Casey Kavorkian” she has just gotten her license to Kill and toss.

And may her life here on earth be a living HELL for her. Hopefully her parents won’t allow her back in the home and if they do they better watch their back and sleep with one eye open!

  • DonnaK

I see no reason for Baez to brag or think he was successfull, it was the stupid jury that couldn’t bring themselves to get justice for baby Caylee…Maybe the evidence was not there for the death penalty, but she was the last one seen with Caylee, didn’t report her missing until her Mother forced her, I think the evidence was overwhelming that she killed her, maybe not premeditated, but she should have been charged with manslaughter or 2nd degree…There was no truth or justice for Caylee, and after today, there never will be..Now she will laugh all the way to the bank, with a book deal & movie, but she is going to be the most hated person in the world….

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Maryann-Mitchell/100001897982580 Maryann Mitchell

The jury in my opinion was not listening to the prosecution who PROVED without doubt that casey was guilty’
The jury should bow their heads in shame because today Caylee didnt get justice. Maybe Casey can hook up with OJ to find the murderes. OMG I am so sad for that baby.

I think she is guilty. In my mind, there is no doubt that she did something to that child which caused her death. But, I thought she would be found not guilty of first degree murder, with the death penalty, due to reasonable doubt.

But I thought / hoped she would be convicted of a lesser charge, and spend some time in prison. … being in genpop, getting her face smashed in regularly by the women in prison who would give anything to be with their beloved children.

“I think that this case is a perfect example of why the death penalty does not work and why we all need to stop and look and think twice about a country that decides to kill its own citizens.

Is he implying that the jury found the “thought” of death penalty too much to bear so they didn’t convict her. Fear and guilt over a possible death sentence not facts, evidence, etc… was the main factor in play for why the jury voted the way they did and she got off??
Otherwise I am not sure what he is implying.

His statement that he saved a life today, doesn’t bring about any redemption for the loss of the other little life – you know, the one the entire trial centered around.

How about this one Mr. Baez, if the citizens of this country would stop murdering innocent victims then the threat of punishment wouldn’t be necessary. The thought of life in prison for some would be like a retirement plan on the federal dime theses days.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lars-Svensen/100001028197161 Lars Svensen

Humble he-man Jose Baez did a great & noble service to his client and to the nation. Cute Casey will soon be free to get on with her life, to relax, smell the roses, and perhaps find “Mr. Right”: A good man who will love, honor, & cherish her, provide her with a good home, a nice car, and emotional & financial security.

  • LOGICandREASON

Cases like this should not be used to exploit the death penalty issue. Capital punishment(death penalty) is necessary as I have said, and should be administered only when direct evidence(e.g. murders recorded live on camera or numerous witnesses) is available, rather than circumstantial evidence that are often flawed.

As a matter of fact there are very evil people amongst us who never hesitate to take a life whenever possible. People’s lives have been taken for robberies that involved even less than $10, and some of those victims(single parents in some cases) had children to take care of. Some people are so evil to kill their wives/husbands and children just for a family dispute or finance related, and most are pre-meditated multiple murders.

Death penalty serves as a deterrent to those who have no problem killing innocent people, and at least they have to worry about being executed if caught so they often consider the implications of the crime in advance. If there’s no death penalty in America, multiple murders will increase since a life sentence guarantees the killers free food and accommodation by tax payers money for life, and their loved ones could visit them forever.

  • CAconservative

I suppose Mr.Baez would rather see a child murderer live their life out behind bars? Anyone who commits 1st degree murder does not need to be breathing the same air we are. That person is a sick person who needs to put out of our misery. The whole legal process is built on revenge in one form or another. In the case of murder it’s the ultimate revenge. I personally don’t care if putting a scumbag murderer to death reduces the number of murders. I only care that, that particular murderer is never going to get the chance to murder anyone else, and will not be allowed to to live a life, they took away from another. The death penalty is the ultimate criminal reform act, and should be used far more often. Their human rights ended, the moment they permanently took the right to live from another!

  • Spike1

The media has poisoned the minds of many people, past & present. For three years all we heard was she killed her baby even though it wasn’t proven. The media has turned into a lynch mob and if you have an independent and clear mind you realize it. It’s a free country and you can believe whatever you want but , that doesn’t make it so. The judge told the jury you must find the accused guilty or not guilty of the crime accused. He did not say you must find the accused guilty or innocent. The media is the most corrupt business in the country after the government.
