Chris Matthews: Trump’s Only Reason To Question Obama’s Grades Is Because He’s Black
Chris Matthews spoke with Clarence Page from the Chicago Tribune and Eric Boehlert from Media Matters and told them how he was amazed that anyone could still doubt the intelligence of President Obama. The response was prompted by Donald Trump‘s assertion that “he wasn’t a good student” yet somehow got into Harvard Law School. Both Matthews and Page didn’t know how that could be interpreted any other way than Trump suggesting Obama was an “affirmative action baby.”
After Trump’s comments aired, labeling Obama a bad student, Page joked that Trump actually mixed up Presidents and was really talking about President Bush. And Matthews thought the suggestion that Obama was not smart was ludicrous, passionately declaring why he personally thought Obama was very intelligent:
“And then I listened to him – I read part of his book – I said this is beautifully written, there’s texture here, it’s American – great writing. And then I listened to his speeches. I was obviously taken – I was famous for having been taken with them. But the fact is, the guy grabbed me for what he was in his presentation. You met him and knew it would be great.”
Matthews wasn’t quite done defending the President, also asking and then answering his own question:
“How many white kids who were smarter than [Obama] didn’t get into Harvard? I don’t think there are any!”
Finally concluding, Matthews echoed the opinion of others, saying “there would be no reason to assume this guy didn’t have the right numbers, except he’s black.”
