Chuck Todd: Jeff Sessions in ‘Extraordinary Trouble’ for Russia Statements

A flurry of reports out Thursday night regarding the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia have put now-Attorney General Jeff Sessions in the hot seat.

As the New York Times reported, the AG’s under-oath denials before the Senate that anyone on the campaign had contact with Russians have been challenged by new evidence.

NBC News’s Chuck Todd appeared on Today Friday morning, and was asked by Matt Lauer if Sessions is in trouble for his statements.

“In normal Washington I would say he’s in extraordinary trouble,” Todd said. “He doesn’t have a lot of confidence, as far as the president is concerned,” he continued, before noting that Sessions faces even more anger in Capitol Hill.

“It is now, apparently I believe we’re up to the third time, that Jeff Sessions has had to suddenly correct the record about either a meeting with Russia officials or something involving Russia.”

“Senators don’t take kindly to being misled under oath, especially from the chief law enforcement officer,” Todd said.

Todd concluded that the president’s own problems with Sessions have created a “vice-grip” on the attorney general: “He’s got a president here who’s basically screaming ‘please, do something to distract from Russia, investigate Hillary Clinton.'”

Just Friday morning, Trump issued a series of tweets calling on the Justice Department and the FBI to look into “all of the dishonesty going on with Crooked Hillary & the Dems…”
