Elena Kagan Reveals How Jews Celebrate Christmas

video

If nothing else at least we can be assured Elena Kagan has a sense of humor. During today’s hearings Sen. Lindsey Graham asked Kagan, in relation to a question about the Christmas Day Bomber, “where were you on Christmas day?” Responded Kagan, to a deserved round of applause: “You know, like all Jews, I was probably at a Chinese restaurant.” Point Kagan.

Apparently, Sen. Patrick Leahy had had the joke explained to him earlier by New Yorker (and Jew) Chuck Schumer. Watch below.

It’s nice to know that at some point, we can all laugh together.

That was a great answer. She does have a sense of humor.

    That was a great moment.

    That surprises no one.

I would be more interested in hearing her thoughts on the restrictions that she thinks should be applied on the ways Christians can celebrate Christmas. In our school district, even a scrawled drawing of Santa Claus in a youngster’s folder spurs a crackdown by the thought police. Will Ms. Kagan please offer her thoughts on that?

  • paulmdoro

Obviously she is pro-banning Christmas altogether.

  • Ination

@paul – if you’re not a Christian, you’re sole purpose in life is to destroy Christianity, remember? :-)

I’d venture an educated guess she’s not a big believer in Christmas displays in schools, airports etc….

There’s a reason why it’s called “National Go to the Movies and Eat Chinese Food Day.”

Exactly. All non-Christians think about 24/7 is banning Christmas.

It certainly would appear that way with all the lawsuits, wouldn’t it?

What I want to k now is:
“..Kagan’s opposition of military recruitment on the Harvard campus–
which she called a discriminatory group due to its Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy–
was hypocritical as she did not also protest against the creation of a new
Center for Islamic Studies “and Sharia Law.”

“But she did not speak out in 2005 when a Saudi prince donated $20 million to the creation of a Center for Islamic Studies at Harvard. This showed a double-standard,
    because some
Muslims follow Sharia Law literally, in which homosexuality is sometimes punishable by death:

Tiredofbs, you need some lessons on how good liberals view religion. According to the Left, some religions can never be criticized, while others must always be criticized. Can you guess which religions fit into each category?

Here is a hint: if religious fanatics kill innocent people with suicide bombers or fly planes into buildings, they belong to a religion that can’t be criticized.

So true.. progressives love to show tolerance , for a law ( Sharia ) and culture that is intolerant …comical.

A bigger threat to Christmas displays and, for example, tax exempt status for churches, is libertarian theology.

There is nothing like mentioning the word “religion” to bring out the anti-christian bigotry of the libs. Oh, they are so brave- Ha ! These cowards are so afraid of criticizing other religions but they will support their own when one gets caught in her bigotry, i.e. Helen Thomas!

And boy, do they care about the rights of Muslim terrorists!

    Congrats libs, ya never disappoint!

Na… I wouldn’t think so. Libertarians aren’t hell bent on controlling people like a nanny as the the dems are so fond of. They (libertarians) prefer to be left the hell alone. The dems of this day and age are the biggest threat to individual liberty we’ve ever seen and we’ll all soon be poor enough to prove it.

  • Ination

@notsofast – who are you calling a liberal? I think you have me confused with someone else.

Libertarians want everyone to be left alone until you tell them what you do when you are.

Much better. :-) But mind you I was being sarcastic. I think it’s a little paranoid to think that there’s a “war” on Christmas. The holiday seems to be doing just fine. Plus, I don’t really care if someone has a picture of Jesus on their desk at work – more power to them. Religion is a good thing. It has laid out an excellent moral center of gravity for our society over the years. Now, horrible misrepresentations and misinterpretations, on the other hand, are not good. Not all Christians are on a crusade to blow up abortion clinics nor are all muslims commited to attack America nor are all atheists moral-less heathens. Are there? You bet but let’s not generalize. It’s easy to come to that conclusion when it is only those types that get put on the television when they do something insane.

  • felixw

Ination, you think there is no war on Christmas? Then why is the ACLU going after Christmas trees, Christmas parties, Christmas displays, crucifixes, Christmas carols, etc. etc.? You should clarify your statement: there is no war on Christmas so long as Christians keep silent.

  • m

War on Christmas is one of the stupidest most insane things ever invented in modern political discourse. You’re being played for complete suckers.

  • felixw

Sure, the people that wage the war on Christmas hate it when anyone calls it a war on Christmas. Why don’t those Christians just keep quite and keep their religion hidden, huh?

You wouldn’t know a damn thing about how liberals view religions. Just what you pull out of your Republican place (your ass).

  • the real john t

The person that came up with “The War on Christmas” was none other than the idiot Bill O’Reilly. That tells you right there how stupid it is.

  • notsofast

  • Level Headed American

I have a question for Graham.

Why is how she spent Christmas relevant?

Was he setting up some kind of point that the clip did not show?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Josh-Feldman/1158574704 Josh Feldman

Jews don’t want a war on Christmas. If there was a war during Christmas, the Chinese restaurants would all be closed.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mark-Magas/1064775180 Mark Magas

Why was he asking where she was on Christmas? Was she suspected of complicity in the bombing?

As a liberal I think I should tell you that all evil is open to criticism. I believe it was Micah that liberal prophet who said “When you see evil shout it out.” Sharia is a barbaric law system. Like the US it includes the death penalty, and plus Sharia includes all the worst aspects of a theocracy which include subjugation and discrimination against women and gays.

On balance I think Christianity has been a plus but of course there are people who use it as an excuse to express their hatred and claim God’s blessing.

There are a great many people who claim to be liberals and hate both Christains and or all believers. If they were familiar with Roosevelt’s seven tenets they would know that such hatred is illiberal. You see calling yourself a liberal is no more legitimate than calling yourself a conservative. There are only a few of either in this country.

  • felixw

Hey Real John T, you just proved my point about how liberals view religion even better than anything I could have said. Thanks for this pithy contribution to the discussion.

  • clemdane

I don’t believe there’s a war on Christmas. I have to admit a somewhat irrational feeling that even though it really isn’t fair for kids who don’t celebrate Christmas to have it promoted in a public school I still feel like things are changing too rapidly in society. The way we have to question and sniff out every cultural tradition and eliminate it in order to avoid ever giving discomfort to anyone seems extreme to me. Seems like what we did when I was a kid was okay, i.e., having holiday celebrations that encompass Christian, Jewish and even just Winter traditions. Nowadays it seems like we have to stamp out anything that comes from a specific tradition instead of including several. Parents can’t bake cupcakes and send them with a child in case one child has an allergy or food preference. Some schools won’t allow Halloween decorations because fundamentalist Christians consider it a Satanic religious holiday, etc. etc. I liked it better when every last little thing didn’t have to be examined under a microscope.

  • John999

I didn’t find her comment funny at all. It was a pejorative view of Jewish people and I was SUPREMELY OFFENDED. This is an old tired joke and because she is Jewish does not make it more palatable. It is by nature itself a RACIST comment. It also was an insult to the Federal Holiday as well as an insult to all Christians. I am not interested in whether she is Jewish or not or likes Chinese food or not, or can afford to go to restaurants. It would’ve been a little humbling of her not to go the “borscht belt” route of humor, and simply have said that she was preparing dinner at home for her family, or was having dinner at a restaurant.
PERHAPS WHEN YOU ARE AN UPPER WESTSIDE ELITIST JEW YOU GO TO A CHINESE RESTAURANT ON CHRISTMAS. I PERSONALLY FEEL THAT WE AS AMERICANS AND THOSE OF US WHO ARE JEWISH WOULD BE BETTER SERVED IF SHE DID STAND-UP COMEDY, INSTEAD OF TRYING TO BECOME A SUPREME COURT JUSTICE.
