Fair & Balanced? Fox News Anchor Praises GOP’s “Better Solutions”

At a certain point — years ago, probably — the Fox News slogan “Fair & Balanced” became a tongue-in-cheek challenge to detractors. Men lie, women lie, politicians lie — numbers don’t, and Fox’s domination in the ratings allows them to more or less do and say as they please. You don’t like it? Change the channel. But you’ll probably keep watching, whether as a masochist, a true believer or someone who likes cable news as entertaining as informative. But what’s one more example?

Check out this video clip of a Fox “hard news” anchor asks Fox News contributor Rick Santorum if President Obama will pursue any of the Republicans’ “better solutions…twenty-seven pages of very well thought out ideas.” Santorum’s response is predictable and less important, but be prepared: he praises President Bush.

UPDATE: And yes, of course, the GOP plan is called “Better Solutions,” a convenient and media friendly name, indeed. But in her pass off to Santorum, the anchor forgoes calling the plan anything besides “better solutions,” and makes her view on the “very well thought out ideas” quite clear. Watch and judge for yourself, then berate one another in the comments!

Here’s the clip:

Humans breathe air. Fish live in water.

  • TfT

Fox is the most trusted name in news. If you don’t think policy written in 27 pages is better than policy written in 2700 pages, well then I kind of feel sorry for ya.

  • TfT

Oh and PS; before you criticize FNC for what the anchor said, perhaps you should read this:
    —————————————————–
Several commenters today asked where they could find copies of the G.O.P.’s “Better Solutions,” a document outlining the party’s legislative reform
    —————————————————–

This is the document that the pubbies gave Obama at their retreat. “Better Solutions” is the name of the document.

  • Cecelia

There are links to the pdf to it all over the web.

    (giggle)

  • WaterLoo

You’ve gotta be DRY humping me with this “news article” here. Great “in depth” reporting Mediate. TFT, thanks for clearing up this POOR attempt to discredit FOX News. Hahaha boy does someone look silly

  • TfT

Funny thing is the media have simply ignored the admission by Obama at the retreat:

    On health care:

“…….For example, we said from the start that it was going to be important for us to be consistent in saying to people if you can have your — if you want to keep the health insurance you got, you can keep it, that you’re not going to have anybody getting in between you and your doctor in your decision making. And I think that some of the provisions that got snuck in might have violated that pledge.”

Obama admits that the dems 2700 page bill included language that allowed the government to get “in between you and your doctor” and the media ignores it.

In order to stay clear of calling out Obama’s admission, the media has to go after FNC instead. Too funny.

  • Cecelia

Funniest thing in the piece is Coscarelli’s line “but be prepared: he [Santorum] praises President Bush.”

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! MY EARS!!! OH GOD, MY EARS!!!

  • WaterLoo

The unrelenting pounding on Fox News is laughable at this point.

  • Cecelia

“he anchor forgoes calling the plan anything besides “better solutions,” and makes her view on the “very well thought out ideas” quite clear. Watch and judge for yourself, then berate one another in the comments!”

Well, we can settle for berating you. :D

The president said at the meeting that he has not received any viable ideas about health care plan alternatives from the Republicans.

Administration spokespeople have said Republicans have offered NO ideas.

That statement has been put into the form of a question by many journalists– “Do the Republicans have any ideas or are they just blocking the president?”

The push from a journalistic perspective SHOULD be towards the president now. “These ideas are viable. They’re well-thought-out. What’s your answer, Mr. President?”

There’s nothing wrong or biased in that. A push from the right (almost unheard of on other networks) is just as viable a journalist pushing from the left by asking a Republican if they’re willing to scuttle health care for all Americans this year.”.

  • RazorsEdge

I’d like to see the video from entire segment. It “appears” that Mediaite clip is partial clip of segment. Did Santorum describe “better solutions” document earlier insegment with 27 pages ideas etc?

If Santorum did not, seems a little off for Anchor to go to that length. About as off as Coscarelli’s HL of anchor praising “Better Solutions”

Coscarelli with his update, indicated he knew all along that was GOP document name but “lead” the readers with his HL, that anchor’s intentions were much more sinister by using “better solutions” when he knew it was the doc name.

  • johnny dollar

Actually, it shouldn’t be a surprise that Jamie Colby’s “Better Solutions” was in fact a reference to the title of the document. Earlier in this same segment, she specifically identified “Better Solutions” as the title of the GOP’s document of 27 proposals. It appears however that someone decided that part of the interview not be included in the clip posted by Mediaite.

  • WaterLoo

    @johnny dollar- Imagine that right???

PS- Love the name and the sight!!!

  • WaterLoo

Whoops, meant…site. That’s like having a target on my back posting here!!!

  • timzank

Is Coscarelli a contributor at Newshounds as well? Or just an avid reader? Hmmmmm……

  • Cecelia

What sort of video does Media Matters or Think Progress have on their site today?…

  • puck30

First off, It’s Rick Sanitarium. There’s a reason we voted him out of here in PA.

Second, so what Joe? Compaired to what? That two hour presentation by the Three Stooges over at MSNBC last night?

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3036677/

Funny how you missed that one Mr. ‘Fair & Balanced’.

  • tjl

Joe, the hounds are out tonight. Let them “defend” Fox News. I love the “they are the most trusted news source” argument. Right, this coming from the same country that raised Sarah Palin’s 2nd grade term paper to the top of the NYT’s best-sellers list.

TfT made an excellent point — who wants to read something that is 2700 pages when you can read something that’s 27 pages…. where do we rank among the world in math, science, reading…..? No need to look that up. Just look above…

  • TeaPartyAmerican

Well, Fox News is my only source for real news. But on this one I have to agree, she really did not stay neutral. Leave the opinion for the Opinion shows. When they do this during their hard news shows it just gives the left ammunition

  • Cecelia

“No need to look that up. Just look above…”

Don’t be so hard on yourself. I imagine that you got your name right.

  • timzank

I’ve got $100 sez you never SAW her book, much less READ it.

Now get upstairs and get washed up! Your mom just hollered “suppers ready”.

  • puck30

Why isn’t MSNBC the most trusted name in news? I refer to the link above.

Maybe FNC is more trusted because while Olbermann, Maddow & Matthews were playing ‘Naked Fantasy Twister’ with Obama for two hours Friday Night. O’Reilly had liberal radio talk show host Leslie Marshall and the Washington Post’s Sally Quinn.

Besides, isn’t Leslie Marshall and Sally Quinn becoming weekly regulars on The Factor. Ah, does anybody remember the last time Olbermann had anybody on his show with an opposing point of view?

And how about that ‘Fair, Balanced & Stable’ Ed Schultz? I can’t see any reason why I shouldn’t trust a guy who is a few fries short of a happy meal.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gt8nZGJy3WI

David Schuster? No one better prepaired then that guy. NOT!

Palin’s second grade term paper? Why Olbermann’s books never made it into the NYT best seller list is beyond me. Didn’t Beck have four or five best sellers last year?

While I’m at it: Hardball: How Politics Is Played – Told By One Who Knows The Game-Chris Matthews Pub. Date: November 1999
    240pp
Barnes and Noble Sales Rank: 15,594

I would have used the one he wrote last year, but it seems the eleven year old paperback is selling much better.

Rachel Maddow: A Neowonk Guide to the Leftist, Lesbian Pundit
    by Xander Cricket
    Pub. Date: March 2009
    76pp
Barnes and Noble Sales Rank: 187,085

WOW! Even at $4.50 I guess 76 pages is still a tough read for some.

  • puck30

I did want to mention, Jamie Colby is pretty brutal. Have to admit I find myself going over to MSNBC to view the more perky Alex Witt.

  • da-wdc

Definitely a loaded question there. I wonder if Fox will take this kind of thing seriously coming from Mediaite. 27 pages of “very well thought out ideas”? Unless that was the subheading of the report, not exactly a fair and balanced way to describe it.

  • Fidoohki

Okay joe.. now you are just getting desperate.

  • TeaPartyAmerican

I still think it is a valid criticism. She crossed the line and no it was not titled “very well thought out ideas” That was her showing bias. Remember Fox has a much higher standard then MSNBC. So they should be called out when showing bias.

  • timzank

    TeaPartyAmerican says:
    January 30, 2010 at 7:35 pm

So who do ya think you’re fooling?

  • TeaPartyAmerican

Oh please timzank There is a Tea Party movement today becuase no one called out our leaders when Republicans ran everything. Being a comment troll helps no one.

  • timzank

Hey TeaPartyAmerican, Why do i suspect your IP address probably matches up with roxsteady’s or someone similar?

  • TeaPartyAmerican

timzank, why do I suspect your IQ matches up with Nancy Pelosi’s?

  • same2u

Regardless of the title of the document, it is an overtly biased remark the anchor makes when she says “27 pages of very well thought out ideas”.

And this is just one more example why having opposition voices on during a segment does NOT make Fox New’s “fair and balanced”,

  • Cecelia

same2u, by that standard of “bias” it would be impossible for CNN’s John King to remark after a speech that the president was eloquent. Or for NBC’s Brian Reynold’s to venture that Pres. Obama “systematically and carefully” put forth his proposals.

The point is, venturing an opinion is not biased in itself. Remember the president spent time in his speech at the Republican retreat stipulating what provisions or omissions that he wouldn’t entertain at all in any plan. Colby could read the 27 piece synopsis of proposed initiatives and make a judgment– “This isn’t garbage or puffery. It includes most of what the president wants. It seems well-thought-out” Colby could surmise THAT while thinking any number of things about how well the plan stacks up against what she knows about a Democratic one.

Because the rhetoric has been that the Republicans have NO ideas, and that they are the Party of No, the responsibility is upon the president to do what he said he would do– assess and discuss any serious Republican proposal.

THAT is the equal and opposite push from the one given to Republicans when the media suggested that the onus is on them to come with something besides no.

THAT is a push to both sides. And that IS balance.

  • timzank

Well put Cecelia. I would also venture to say this ridiculously “manufactured outrage” of a non-story story probably won’t show up anywhere of consequence either.

  • sarainitaly

Are they well thought out ideas?

If they are, is there anything wrong in saying so?

I don’t think Joe realized the document was called Better Solutions when he wrote this, or else he was being dishonest when he typed up the transcript.

  • timzank

TeaPartyAmerican, I didn’t mean to honk you off, but your initial comments sounded a little too “staged”. Lotta trolls out there these days.

  • Cecelia

I don’t think he realized it either.

  • TeaPartyAmerican

timzank No troll here – all good.

  • sarainitaly

    welcome TPA!

  • same2u

    Wrong again Cecilia.

When a host is functioning as an arbiter between two opposing partisan views, she or he should refrain from interjecting opinion about the topic or showing favoritism towards one side over the other. This doesn’t mean the host is not allowed to express opinions. It means there is a time and place for them.

You watch Fox News because you want your hosts to show favoritism towards the conservative viewpoint. You appreciate any demonstration of right-wing bias by your hosts, no matter how subtle the gesture. You are a right wing ideologue with a long established history on Johnny Dollar’s Place as a Fox News ass kisser, with a willingness to defend conduct no matter how egregious or reprehensible the act. You are walking talking billboard for Fox News and nothing more.

  • Cecelia

    same2u,

By your own logic, if my enjoying FNC disqualifies from having a valid opinion, then your detesting it put you in the same camp.

When you start talking about egregious and reprehensible acts in the context of what has popped up on this board for the past couple of days, you might consider that your perspective needs a bit tweeking otherwise you might be consigned to sounding like Rod Serling on steroids for the rest of your life.

You might consider too that it’s neigh on impossible to play devil’s advocate on to either party without venturing an opinion. Arbiters are never so removed from the subject at hand that they unable to press for an objective by just such descriptive opining. That IS what arbiters do.

In the context of Ferraro saying that the president was going to focus on Democrats (rather than talking to Republicans) and that he can’t control Democratic senators (never know what those guys will do…) etc….etc… Colby pressed her on the fact that meeting Republicans half-way was what the president SAID he was going to do. No excuses.

We didn’t see the entire interview. I’d be interested in seeing it. However, you used the analogy of arbiter and you’ve picked precisely the right term for what Colby did.

The Party of No put-up. Now it’s your turn, Mr. President.

    Again, that’s balance.

  • tjl

Ha. Thanks for the good laugh, all. Tim, I’d respond but my mom is calling me. Remember when that was a funny joke? As I’ve said earlier, I still haven’t met a funny republican. And Tim, you are among the worst of them. TROLL! Pretty kewl internet slang bro. You should probably get outside every once and a while….

  • sarainitaly
  • Dave Richards

sametoyou, how stupid does one have to be to believe that Colby was biased by repeating “27 pages of very well thought out ideas”. They were somone else’s words and not hers.

You probably need to take a course in logic.

  • Cecelia

    Dave Richards says:
You probably need to take a course in logic.
    —————————————————————————————————————–

Well, you know the old adages:

‘Youth is wasted on the young.’

‘A course in logic is wasted on morons like sametoyou”

  • pyrope

Do you think it may be possible that she said they were “well thought out ideas” because she actually read them? Do you think Mr. -Obama claimed he hadn’t received any ideas from the Republican because he simply refused to look at them?

On the “audience” Mr. -Obama finally gave to the Republicans, don’t you think he’s finally awakened to smell the coffee after the stunning win of Scott Brown, in Massachusetts? Do you think this audience would ever have been granted had Mr. -Obama retained his super majority in the Senate?

Folks, I believe we’re just beginning to see how important was Scott Browns defeat of Croakley. Keep the faith–a better day is coming in 2012 and it will be hearalded by the events coming in November of this year. Oh, and another prediction: You’re about to see a LOT of moderating of the Democrats who want to keep their seats in 2010 and 2012, but remember the glimpse you had of their true character while they were running roughshod over anyone with a conservative idea! Remember and think.
