Cable news ratings, January 19, 2010: Check out the highlights, and see the full ratings below:

• In the first of many elections night taking place in 2010, Fox News dominated the cable news networks, with its highest prime time viewership since Election Day 2008. FNC was the #1 news network by far, topping CNN, MSNBC and HLN combined in prime time and total day, total viewers and the A25-54 demographic. Sean Hannity has his best ratings ever in total viewers at 9pmET – the hour Bret Baier announced Scott Brown‘s victory.

• FNC didn’t just clean up on cable. The network had more viewers during prime time than The Jay Leno Show, and Greta Van Susteren‘s 10pmET show and Hannity’s 9pmET show topped all ABC prime time programs.

• CNN finished 2nd in every category, total day and prime time, with MSNBC 3rd. One TV critic had a major problem with MSNBC’s coverage.

judging from the ratings, it looks like Mediaite and a few others were the only people watching MSNBC. Way to go MSNBC! The tens upon tens of viewers you have must be thrilled with your station.

To have your clocks cleaned like “the place for politics” had done to them on election night should be an embarrassment to every single on air “talent”, manager and executive at MSNBC.
Letters of resignation would be in order.
Investors in those properties should be livid. Not only should heads roll, they should be batted out of the park, maybe out of the industry.
But on a possitive note, great job FNC.

  • TfT

CNN made a HUGE mistake not showing Brown’s victory speech. They can no longer be counted on to be the channel that claims it does “real news” when it ignored the biggest national news item of the day.

MSNBC is just flat out an embarrassment; this must break the hearts of many here at mediaite.

FNC is once again the winner showing it indeed is fair, balanced and unafraid.

When will Olbermann be fired? When will Klein be fired?

    When will Olbermann be fired?

    He won’t be. He’ll quit.

If you saw any of Olbermann on election night (as I did), you saw a man who was furious that he wasn’t getting his way… his reaction and statements since then have further proven his instability and inability to “lose” graciously.

KO, had previously left MSNBC because he didn’t want to talk about the Lewinsky scandal, so we know that he doesn’t like reporting things that go against his personal opinion. Thus far, he’s been able to hoot and holler about Bush, and then just Republicans in general… he’s never had to face a dramatic “losing season,” to bring in a sports analogy. And from what we’ve seen so far, he might to be able to.

I predict, that if things continue to go well for Republicans, he might walk out. Now, in my mind that’s very debatable at this point (things continuing to go well for Republicans)… they need to start putting out strong ideas and fighting for policies, or else the Democrats will turn it around and say, “The Republicans prevented you from getting this great healthcare program we wanted to give you!” They’ll be able to be light on specifics, bend the truth to fit their needs, and simply paint Republicans as obstructionists bent on denying the public things that they want… even though they didn’t want it at the time.

But back to the main point… if things go well for Republicans, and they take a lot of seats in the midterm election, KO will be forced to report “good news” about the right, and bad about the left. I don’t think he’s got the (for lack of a better term) sanity to handle that. And if things start pointing to Obama being a one-termer prior to the election, he might walk before he ever needs to report that news!

In short, MSNBC won’t fire Keith… Keith will walk well before it ever comes to that.

  • TfT

I’m not so sure INB. I think Keith went so over the top that this time he might be fired. He is getting terrible press in left wing papers and I don’t think NBCU can take another major hit like it has with Leno/Conan. I’m surprised they haven’t fired him yet; his numbers are deservedly low. I doubt MSNBC will ever report good news about the right, no matter what happens in the 2010 elections. MSNBC hates the right and will work overtime to destroy any righty because it is just what they do. It’s really an embarrassment.

CNN really embarrassed themselves as well by refusing to show Brown’s victory speech….showed their true colors. I think it is laughable how CNN competely avoids the “Its the peoples seat” commentary, given that Scott response was due to Gergan’s poor performance as the debate moderator. Gergan must be shamed that it was he who in large measure is responsible for Brown’s victory. The irony is delicious.

  • The Real Royal King

I see, as usual, most Americans were not tuned into any cable news broadcasting. We aren’t given the credit we deserve. I was at a high school basketball game. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

So your point is we should only talk about the things that a lot-a lot of people are talking about?

I don’t want to talk about McDonalds or American Idol… maybe you’re in the wrong place. It’s all about the universe you’re in… In terms of news and cable news, this is a big deal.
