Political Consultant Mary Matalin To CNN: ‘Only Angry White Men I Know Are Liberals’
On CNN Tuesday, anchor Suzanne Malveaux asked political consultant Mary Matalin to weigh in on Sen. Lindsey Graham‘s recent remark that the GOP is “losing the demographics race” and that the party is “not generating enough angry white guys to stay in business for the long term.”
“The only angry white men I know are liberals,” Matalin responded. “Conservatives are for all Americans.”
“You’re married to one,” joked fellow contributor Donna Brazile. Matalin is, as you may know, married to James Carville.
“Yeah, there you go,” Matalin continued. “They’re not for hyphenating Americans, we’re not dividing Americans. We think women and Hispanics and African-Americans have suffered particularly under this non-recovery, the worst recovery in history and that women and Hispanics and African-Americans and all Americans want an opportunity to have some upward mobility.”
“Is there more the party needs to do to outreach to those folk?” asked Malveaux. “Because it does seem it’s becoming more and more monolithic.”
“The presumption that — speaking of Martin Luther King, Dr. King, — that you would divide people up by race, gender is distinctly un-American,” Matalin responded. “It’s insulting. I think what Jesse Jackson said was was racist, divisive and dark and I would have hoped that the election of the first minority president in a Western democracy would have shown that Americans are past it, but I guess not for Reverend Jackson.” Earlier, Brazile had discussed Jackson’s remark that, if President Obama were to lose this election, it would be “like turning back the clock on all the gains of the Civil Rights movement.”
