JFK spoke out all during that period consistently against the idea of complaints being referred to bipartisan Commission, for legislation that provided recourse to the federal court system & for a dramatic increase in federal government hiring practices to allow for & encourage greater numbers of hires of black Americans. He spoke out in the Senate chamber against the final versions of each of the 1957 and 1960 CRAs for precisely this reason: that referring complaints to a bipartisan Commission would be an attempt to sweep the problem under the carpet & would constitute a step backwards not forwards in ensuring voter rights for black Americans.

Finally, take a look at the history of the CRA of 1964 (You’re right on the date.); the initiative came entirely from the JFK administration in 1963; indeed, the bill had already been reported out of committee before he was assassinated:

In terms of foreign policy, Kennedy was reluctant to start a war in Vietnam and it was his death and LBJ’s subsequent promotion that guaranteed the dumb war. Now in terms of social policy you might have a point but that’s neither here not there. The early 60′s were a different time and it’s difficult to compare and contrast when society was so much more conservative in social terms. But we know he was personally very very not conservative when it came to his private life! So maybe he wouldn’t think gay marriage is a sin. It wasn’t a hot button issue then so we don’t know his personal views. We can’t know. Gay people kept quiet out of fear. Gays in the military was therefore also not a hot button.

While the adoration for Kim Il-Sung was to a large degree true and honest, the worship of Kim Jong-Il was never as genuine as even many western media tried to make us believe. This discrepancy will become even more extreme after the handover to Kim Jong-Un, who doesn’t have a personality cult that has been cultivated for nearly 15 years before he came to power, as was the case for Jong-Il.

I don’t know. I think it’s creepy because I think it looks and feels far from authentic. But I would also argue that in this case, it would seem creepy to me even if it’s authentic simply because it shouldn’t be. I know, speak no ill of the dead and all that—but this man was responsible for the death of millions of their compatriots, so them feeling so sad about his own death feels really wrong and creepy. It’s like the Stockholm syndrome, only on a massive, national scale.

Two guys hiding behind the anonymity of the internet. No name-calling from me, but it is very common in the Asian culture to have professional mourners. The acting is top-rate… Kim Jong Il had very tight control of the media and propaganda-makers. It is not at all surprising that people think the world may come to an end with his death given the “information” they get from government-controlled media. If you ever get the chance, do a night time fly-over of North and South Korea. Note the almost complete darkness within the borders of North Korea and the lights (an indication of prosperity) in South Korea. Communism doesn’t work. Read ‘Atlas Shrugged’.
