The Five: Let’s Stop Demonizing The People Who Do Pay Taxes

Video

On Thursday’s edition of The Five, the crew talked President Barack Obama‘s “fair share” mantra. How does that gel with The Heritage Foundation’s finding that, in 2009, only 50.5 percent of Americans paid any income tax?

RELATED: Rep. Terri Sewell On Mitt Romney’s Tax Release: ‘Something Is Fundamentally Wrong’

Is this news making people angry? “I’m not interested in demonizing people who don’t pay taxes,” said Greg Gutfeld, after pointing out that, when the payroll tax is taken into consideration, the number of people not paying any taxes is actually 18 percent. “I’m interested in stopping the demonization of people who pay most of the taxes. I think that’s what we’re really talking about, is the class warfare rhetoric.”

But Gutfeld is nothing if not a solution-oriented kind of dude. His advice? Set up a “fair share tax” and make members of the media cough up five dollars each and every time they utter the words “fair share.” “In a week,” he said, “the Democratic party would go bankrupt.”

Bob Beckel chimed in to note that it’s a fact (“…this is not class warfare”) that 87 percent of the income in the U.S. is earned by the top 50 percent. So why, he argued, should on the bottom “be paying any taxes” if they “don’t make any money”?

Perhaps, suggested Dana Perino, it could be that our tax system is preventing people from making more.

Beckel leater took exception with Eric Bolling description of people “on the government dole,” finding it “insulting.”

While they disagreed on exactly what actions could be taken to make taxes fairer and easier (including implementing a flat tax), everyone did agree that our tax system is deeply, deeply flawed and needs an overhaul.

Stop wasting the money that comes in.

We don’t need to pay for turtle tunnels or cowboy poetry festivals or for refurbishing minarets on mosques in Egypt or for anybody to buy an energy efficient refrigerator, washing machine or car.

The free market always works. The politicians don’t need more bucks to throw in the wind.

  • Anonymous

You’ve heard me say this a hundred times on this site before.

I am so Tired of Paying More Than My Fair Share.

The Mad Marxist is just buying zombie votes from those who can’t handle their own lives.

Thanks US Education System for producting so many who can’t read and write.

Thanks to HHS for allowing more and more on Medicad, which is free healthcare.

Thanks Congress for the disgraceful approach to improving jobs and coping out to long unemployment benefits.

And Thanks to Barry the Butcher whose sole purpose is to cut American down to size for being the greatest nation in cilvilized history.

All of these braintrusts must go.  NOW  No OBAMA Wackos.

  • L. Ron Gloveard

Obama can set an example for the rest. He can quit spending a million bucks to fly to appear in front of a backdrop, give a 17 minute speech, and then fly home. Maybe he can take an eight car SUV motorcade to play golf instead of a twelve car parade.

Maybe Barry and the little woman can fly in the same plane on vacations and sightseeing trips.
Times are hard and seeing Royal Obamas blowing our dough is not right.

Act like a leader, inspire us, quit demonizing and demagoguing. Be a President.
    Just try it.

It’s simple, irresponsible Democratic Freeloaders want to fund their entire lives – and the lives of their fatherless offspring – on the backs of the hard-working Middle Class.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001154023994 Daniel Thompson

Income taxes are only about a third of total taxes. You’ve got to include payroll, excise, estate and state taxes. There is ABSOLUTELY NO reason to focus solely on income taxes, by doing this you ARE being biased, this is class warfare rhetoric!

  • Anonymous

The federal government takes in over a trillion a year in taxes, yet still want’s more to give to failed green energy slush funds, auto unions, teachers unions, nation building ( i prefer to destroy countries your at war with) Obama vacations 16 so far, gun running in mexico to subvert the 2nd amendment, giving Iran our latest drone technology to use against Israel, destroy NASA, Obama care, the war on religion, the war on gas, the war on affordable food, court marshaling our soldiers and last but not least the sadistic murder and ethnic cleansing Planned Parenthood performs everyday.

But nevertheless, these dirty dirty Democrats demand more and more.

  • Anonymous

If were were to demonize only people who pay taxes then we would not demonize any liberals.  They do everything they can, legally and illegally to avoid paying taxes.

  • Anonymous

Well shit, that would be pretty much everybody.  Though it is true that close to 50% do not pay income taxes (because 40 years of Reaganomics have suppressed wages to such an extent that they no longer make enough to do so – look it up), every person who buys so much as a pack of gum pays taxes.

In fact, the poor and middle class pay, relative to their incomes, much HIGHER tax rates for pretty much everything but incomes.  Needless to say, the 6% sales tax on the same item takes out a much larger proportion of $25,000 than it does of $25,000,000.

In fact, while we’re on this point, could someone please explain to me why progressive tax rates are so horrific, but regressive tax rates are perfectly acceptable?  Why is it class warfare to have a progressive income tax structure, but perfectly acceptable to have a regressive sales tax structure?

  • Anonymous

Here we go all you wingnuts. A family of three, that is right three, one adult and two children who make $40,000 per year in Nebraska basically break even on their federal income tax return taking into account the earned income credit and self-employment tax. I have an idea for all you complaining about them not paying taxes, Live on $40,000 per year.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001154023994 Daniel Thompson

As for Dana’s question, ‘but is our tax system preventing people from making money?’ NO! Know how I know that? Because other countries tax and spend significantly more than the US and their standard of living and the health of their economies is often vastly superior.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Government_spending#Government_spending_as_a_percentage_of_GDP

There are dozens of developed and even developing countries that tax more than the US overall rate of 26.9%. Germany and Australia for instance tax at just over 40% and 30% respectively yet both have unemployment rates under 6% right now. The American economy is stagnating much more because the wealthy don’t pay as high a tax rate as they do in so many other countries rather then the other way round. This is running up massive deficits meaning the US has to pay several hundred billion dollars every year just as interest, is causing financial uncertainty and to make matters worse the huge amount of money that has to be spent nowadays to run for political office in the US means that both parties have virtually been bought out by special interests, especially big corporations.

Polls show 80% of Americans do not support spending cuts alone being used to solve the deficit.

    http://www.gallup.com/poll/148472/deficit-americans-prefer-spending-cuts-open-tax-hikes.aspx

Yet the Republicans have stuck to their guns against overwhelming public opinion, on fiscal and lately social issues, what I’d like to ask is, why? Are they just crazy? And more importantly, why do some people still vote for these lunatics???

  • Anonymous

its simple 40% dont pay taxes that is Obama’s voting group. the other 10% are the rich people who feel guilty for being wealthy and make themselves feel better by saying they are liberals.

What is your answer, keep raising taxes to keep paying projects that don’t do anyone any good? Let the debt rise more? Borrow more money from China until they own us? We don’t have the money to pay for what Obama and  libs want to spend money on. Taxes need to be there because we are in a huge mess, but we need to cut the crap that is putting our country in danger. The more people pay in taxes the less people will spend in our economy, people won’t invest, people won’t give to chairities (which by the way republicans give more than democrats). You talk about lunatics, do you know how we won the cold war? We out spent the Russians. Now we are putting our country in danger by not having any more money to protect ourselves. We can do a lot more than just cut spending, but that is where it starts. People don’t want to cut programs because they get stuff from them, its dangling a carrot in front of them and they don’t want it taken away. People like you can take your entitlements elsewhere cause you’ve been mcsquirtyed!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Neil-Murphy/100000566621491 Neil Murphy

Indeed the spending is out of control, tax reform would be good but pointless if you dont stop the spending. The yearly deficit  is about 1.3trillion right now. Would taxing that 1.3 make things better? I dont think so, nobody would be working. Obamas in ignoramus at best, adding his crappy little surcharges that sound so good wont do anything. 100 billion? God I hate the department of education. You people couldnt GET this stupid without billions of tax dollars and communist liberal teachers unions helping you.

  • Jardino

Nothing wrong with rich people paying tax … but it’s wrong when they pay smaller percentage of their income than middle-class working people.

It’s wrong to pay welfare to people who can work … and it’s wrong to give tax subsidies to people who don’t need tax breaks.

The truth is most always somewhere in the middle … like Obama. C’mon wing nuts. Bring it on. Tell us how the Muslim Commie has destroyed the USA. (YAWN!)

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Neil-Murphy/100000566621491 Neil Murphy

Excactly, they will point to Bush spending but at least Bush bought stuff. Obama just makes dollars disappear.

  • Jardino

Regarding regressive tax, it’s ironic that conservatives who hate treating everyone the same are also obsessed with taxing everyone the same … unless it’s a big tax break for the rich!

I think it is cool that GM is number one auto maker on the planet again. Why do Conservatives hate success?

  • Anonymous

Ok try to pay attention you simpleton,  The reasons GM went under are a poor product and outrages union pensions. Why should i pay for some failed companies Democrat supporting union’s debt.

  • Jardino

The term “fatherless offspring” is nonsense, and I assume you have a problem with unmarried mothers on welfare. It is a problem, and whether it is in inner city Detroit or rural Oklahoma, there are generations of people on welfare. Most of them don’t vote, so it’s stupid to pigeon hole them as Democratic Freeloaders. They drop out of high school and have babies. Maybe you could help them home school their kids and help them pull themselves up … or maybe you could just whine about paying too much tax. I got a feeling you would rather whine about paying too much tax and demonize “irresponsible” poor people. Maybe you would support free child care while the mother gets aid to go to college? Nah … I got a feeling you’d rather whine about paying too much tax. Maybe you would support free contraception? Nah … you’d rather whine about paying too much tax.

There’s a movie called PRECIOUS that could be educational for you … but you’d probably think it was Hollywood Liberal Propaganda. If you are open-minded enough to watch it, I’d watch a movie you recommend.

  • Jardino

I thought management’s objective to maximize profits by selling SUV’s was a big part of the problem. Who wants gas guzzlers when the world MARKET sets rising gas costs? Also, GLOBAL competition is tough when you are an old company with retirees who need medical insurance. Maybe the Board of Directors could invest in new plant and equipment instead of declaring dividends to be taxed at preferential rates for the rich. Don’t GOPHERS believe that the goal of business is to maximize profits for the owners? It takes a GOPHER to see only one factor and ignore everything else.

Finally, Pat Robertson said if GM had gone under, then there would have been a PUBLIC OPTION … socialized medicine! The USA would not let that many retirees lose their medical insurance. There is always another perspective if you have an open mind, but some people only want to hate unions and can’t see anything else.

  • Centrist79

Everybody does what they can to avoid  paying taxes legally.

I agree! Make GM and GE pay SOMETHING! At least a dollar…

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Neil-Murphy/100000566621491 Neil Murphy

Nobody is clomplaing about them not paying taxes, nobody is calling for tax increase(not the GOP) Just STFU and quit hating people who do pay…

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Neil-Murphy/100000566621491 Neil Murphy

Not true, we want lower taxes.  Big tax break for the rich? GM – record profits – zero taxes. GE – 18billion profits – zero taxes 3 years running. These are 2 of the largest corporations in the world and they are so far up Obamas ass they could brush his teeth. Maybe someone should occupy GM?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Neil-Murphy/100000566621491 Neil Murphy

Well when the federal govt crushes all your competition AND you dont have to pay ANY taxes at all….Its not all tat hard to turn a profit.

  • Jardino

I don’t understand what you mean about Fed Gov’t crushing competition. Was there an auto company that our Government destroyed?

Regarding taxes, the Internal Revenue Code allows businesses to carry losses forward. It is odd that an exception was made for GM’s unique loss carryforward … but it is not true that GM will never have to pay tax again. Once the losses are used, future profits will be taxed. Meanwhile, GM pays its employer’s share of Social Secuity and Medicare. The income taxes paid by its employees are way more than taxes on its profit. Every cloud has a silver lining!

Finally, let’s analyze this comment: “AND you don’t have to pay ANY taxes at all … Its not all tat hard to turn a profit.”

First off, what’s with “tat”? Are you imitating Eddie Murphy doing a Buckwheat imitation?

Next, taxes are based on profits. Companies that have losses never pay taxes. Wouldn’t it be great if not paying taxes would turn a profit? “Tat” comment does not make sense.

  • Jardino

Regarding GE tax, that situation is different than GM. It sounds like you are an advocate for tax reform. It’s refreshing to hear a conservative who wants to use the Tax Code to raise more revenue.

The GM story is different; but once its loss carryforwards are used, it will start paying tax again. Meanwhile, the income taxes paid by EMPLOYEES WHO HAVE JOBS are way more than the income tax on GM’s profits.

Good luck on lower taxes. You are going to need it.

I know what I’m talking about and I understand taxes: income, Social Security, Medicare, sales tax, real estate tax, gasoline/alcohol/phone excise tax … more.

Add them for average person. Divide by average income.

Add Romney’s taxes. Divide by Romney’s income … including his untaxed income.

Average person’s is higher. It’s math … not politics.

Consider someone more than average at $100,000 wages. Due to regressive FICA and income tax, that person pays more than Romney’s 15%.

What a dumb a$$ comment. Do you know how many people in this country live below the poverty line of course you don’t. Your head is so far in the clouds like many of your conservative leaders you have no idea what some people are dealing with on a day to day basis. I’ll give you the answer to my question 46.2 million people live below the poverty line. The highest in 52 years. Do you think these people should or can pay taxes? Of course you do let’s kick them while their down that is what you believe in. People like you could care less whether these people live or die. Greed is what killing this country. Anyone with a brain should see that.

Conservative are obsessed with taxing everyone the same because every fixed tax strategyproposed has benefited the wealthy. Cain’s 9-9-9 plan and Newt and Perry plans do the sam thing. Benefit the wealthy.

  • Anonymous

Sorry, but again you prove you have not a clue.
Tell me about Romney’s “untaxed” income?

Let’s consider sales tax – you think Romney is buying the same volt you are? lol  I am quite certain that Romney pays a heck of a lot more sales tax than you or I do.  He would also pay a lot higher property tax.  All in all – he’s putting a hell of a lot more money into the economy because he’s wealthy and pays higher on everything.

Your attempt at “finance 101″ didn’t work.  I’m afraid you have to repeat the course.

What exactly is “real estate tax”?  Why would you be paying real estate tax?

  • Jardino

Obama earned more of his wealth than Romney earned his. Romney earned much of his wealth the old-fashioned way: INHERITANCE.

Why do you say Obama gave GM money? The US Treasury loaned money to GM, and GM paid it back.

I understand why conservatives hate how GM survived; but the good outweighs the bad. Would you have been happier if over a million more people lost their jobs? Don’t you have any pride that an American company has the most auto sales in the world?

Hopefully, you are consistent and also oppose tax subsidies/breaks for oil, farmers and other special interests. If you do, your GOP leaders don’t agree with you.

Regarding GM’s ecord profits, the Tax Code allows businesses to carry losses forward. When the losses are used up, GM will pay tax again. GM workers pay income tax on their wages … and that is more than GM’s tax saved by carrying loss forward. (NOTE : When a business has a loss, it pays no tax … so the deductions are lost unless the Tax Code allows the loss to be carried forward.)

State taxes are similarly tiered like federal (not all exactly alike, of course) not changing the basic point:  top 10% paying the top 70% of taxes in this country.  Like Adam Carolla said, imagine 10 people going to dinner running up a  $1,000 tab- one pays $700, five don’t pay anything, and then those five complain about the one paying $700 for not contributing their  fair share.   That’s Obama’s economic philosophy as well, with the mainstream media going  along- there are a lot more voters not paying than the relative few that are, and he is pandering to them.  That’s our leader.

Weird then that the Southern States that receive the most Federal support per dollar raised (Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, etc all get back about $2 for every dollar they raise, whereas States like Mass’, NY, CT, CA only get back $0.80 for every dollar they send to Washington) and have the highest number of people on Federal Government assistance are the ones that vote Republican. Clearly a whole lot of denial and self-loathing going on. The Red States also have higher divorce rates and single parent homes.

So you two have both admitted you fully support Obama on this issue? You guys make me weep, I bet you’ll both vote for the Republicans in 2012 without even realising how much more radical and different they are from you politically than Obama and the Democrats!

The other adult in this situation happens to be a woman who is spending 10 years in jail for dealing meth. The father has worked construction all of his life and has had a steady job since high school. Unfortunately, his ex-wife started messing around with drugs and he threw her out of their house. Accusing someone of “hating persons who do pay” is simply part of your victimization game. No where in my original post did I even suggest class envy. Gutfeld went after a large portion of our population who do not pay federal income taxes. I gave him and the bloggers on this site, an example of the reasons some persons do not pay.

Agreed…and he will conceid when something he feels a liberal does something that is wrong, which lends so much more creedance to everything else that he may defend..

Everyone I know who lives below the poverty line is their because of self inflicted circumstances…poor choices, irresposnibility, apathy, etc…

When you go to the conveinence store and by $25 dollars in scratch tickets, then spend the remaining six dollars on you ebt car for milk and bread…I dont have much sympathy for you.

Aslo,…isn’t kind of wierd, that this massive increase in poverty seems to start right around when we started our “War on Poverty”?

Tax increase will give a short bump in revenue followed by a decline as people hide there money in tax shelters and what not.

And even if they didn’t and we taxed every millionair and billionaire at a 50% rate, we would only close the budget gap by 1/3rd, even if we ingored the implications of that type of tax increase,.

The devil is in the details.  Acknowledging that federal money by this study includes Medicaid, Medicare, Soc Soc, veterans benefits, unemployment, SNAP, income assistance, Education assistance, and payments to native Americans…there is an interesting mix of “Good” and “Bad” federal money rolled up into the same bin to get the aggregate.  This study ignores states that tend to recieve large numbers of retirees, states with high numbers of military personel, and states with large acedmeic institutions….without even getting into infrastructure and what not.

If you really want to isolate where the parasite states are show me something that isolates SNAP, Medicaid, unemployment, and income assistance…and your map will look significantly different.

I love your energy on the details front. Lets do this!

“If you really want to isolate where the parasite states are show me something that isolates SNAP, Medicaid, unemployment, and income assistance…and your map will look significantly different.”

1: What percent of federal spending do you think goes to SNAP+medicaid+unemployment+income assistance?
2: How are the “parasite” categories identified above different than medicare, S.S., veterans benefits, etc? What distinguishes “parasite” from “partner”?

  • Just some Blow Hard…

You do know CA stand for California right?  They only get about $.80 (according to Mark) and he stated it right there.  Maybe they should have paid more for public schools where you live.

  • Just some Blow Hard…

Because that would be against the religious convictions of their job holders!!!

You can’t have it both ways Pablo.

“Teabaggers?” don’t you left-wingers get tired of using the same petty insults?

Spoken like a true conservative. You have lived up to Archie Bunker mindset you are. So you are telling me the kid that was born in the housing project or a person with cancer and no insurance chose to be on the poverty side of the line. Poverty has been around since man. This is not a new thing or started with a “war on pverty” program. Yes their are people out there that will exploit any welfare system, but you don’t fix this problem by sticking your head in the sand and saying that the way it is. You look for reasons and fixes. If you chose to ignore the problem the problem will only grow year after year.
What gets me with many conservatives is they say they are christians, but they have either don’t read the bible or must practice their faith on Sunday only because their behavior is certainly is not christian like.
