This Exists: Fox News Interviews ‘Ben Franklin’ and ‘Betsy Ross’

Long weekends can be tough on everyone in the news business. There’s a lot of space to fill — or if you’re in cable TV hours to fill — and depending on the newscycle not necessarily all that much to fill it with. With that in mind we’ll refrain from passing judgment on a interview segment Fox News ran this afternoon with ‘Ben Franklin’ and ‘Betsy Ross.’

234 years ago today our next guests were right in the heart of the action…they look pretty darn good!

Yes. Please welcome Ben Franklin and Betsy Ross (and then perhaps raise a glass to the weekend staff forced to this segment). ‘Ross’ and ‘Franklin’ were apparently there to discuss what it was like “back there, July 4th 1776.” According to Besty, “a simple woman” independence was the “talk of the city.” I won’t spoil the rest for you. Watch below.

The amount of over the top americana jingoism on Fox News is disgusting.

Ummm…that interviewer would have been one of Ben Franklin’s slaves back then.

She should have asked him, “You really want me to wash your clothes right now, don’t you?”

  • valkyrie101

Not fair. Ben was way liberal about woman, in general. A tolerent man, in general.

  • Snipzor

This over the top patriotism in the form of wearing everything in the form is a little silly, and by silly, I mean it makes you look insane. I mean, leave the period actors at the tours.

  • DorkyMcForky

Yes, America is cool, we get it. That being said, I get tired of Fox trying to gloss over the numerous flaws of the founding fathers. They try to build them up to be larger than life, when in reality, they were just another bunch of racist white people who just happened to form a country. They treated minorities like shit, just like everyone else in those days.

The only difference between the media interviewing fake Founders and the media interviewing fake Santas is that you don’t get presents on the 4th of July.

  • Rescuedog

Yeah, it’s really stupid. I changed the channel this afternoon when that interview came on. But before we all pile on Fox, let’s not forget that Today and GMA used to interview Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy. At least Fox had human beings, even if they were actors.

@Snipzor: I was under the impression that they were a couple of costumed interpreters, so being Ben and Betsy is likely their fullime job and because no private company was listed in the intro or outro, I assume they work at one of the NPS-managed parks.

It’s sorta sad that, among liberals, being patriotic is uncool.

Franklin didn’t own slaves in 1776. He was a committed abolitionist.

Your own link says he freed his slaves more than 10 years after 1776…

“After Franklin returned from France in 1785, he joined and eventually became president of an abolitionist group founded a decade earlier by the Pennsylvania Quakers. The group was called the Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery and the Relief of Negroes Unlawfully Held in Bondage. Franklin was convinced that not only the slave trade, but slavery itself should be eliminated. He eventually freed his own two slaves. “

So is Fox News only producing content for retards now?

BFD just loves those Negroes. He can make fun of handicapped kids, but don’t you dare say anything about those Negroes.

Yes, they decided to target your audience- libs.

  • notsofast

MSNBC would be bringing both of them up on charges of racism, homophobia and other charges under its “presentism” view of the world.

  • Fox News: We proudly pander to Teabaggers

To be more historically accurate, the black Fox News host should have dressed up as Aunt Jemima and called the lovers of liberty– Ben and Betsy– “Masters”.

No, they refer to the Dems as their “masters.”

Malveaux Hates Fourth of July – Reminds Her of Slavery and Economic Inequality

If you were African-American living in the era of President Barack Obama, would you hate the Fourth of July because it reminded you of slavery and economic inequality?

You would if your name was Julianne Malveaux and you were the syndicated columnist that also serves as the president of Bennett College, the historically black women’s school in Greensboro, North Carolina.

So disdainful of America’s most-revered national holiday is Malveaux that she admitted in her July 2 USA Today op-ed, “I have never been big on the Fourth of July. Most years, I took great pleasure in reading the powerful Frederick Douglass speech, ‘The Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro.’”

    She is a typical lib.

I believe Julianne would be much better off in Africa. There are several countries to choose from. Why wait?

Actually the passage is ambiguous on the date that Franklin freed his slaves. The reason being that historians don’t really know when it happened. But at most he only had 2 and eventually became a leading abolitionist. He wasn’t a slave monger as you tried to portray him in your original post.

    Fixed. Stop inferring.

  • Big_F-ing_Deal

And yeah, when you own slaves you support slavery.

    That’s kinda the definition..lolol

Although Franklin later became an abolitionist, that’s beside the point. The main thing is to slam one of the founding fathers. I wonder why BFD remains in a country he has so much disdain for? All those great deals on plane fares, yet he remains.

    1 – I’m just stating the facts

2 – I thought one of our most basic rights was the right to criticize ourselves.

You’re not very “American” are you?

  • writer

BFD, I’m not the one always bitching about America. You are. You criticized Franklin for owning slaves, but gave no credit for him later becoming an abolitionist. In other words, when talking about anything American, you bend over backwards to look at the bad side. If you think it’s that bad here, why are you staying?
