‘You Have the Nuclear Launch Codes, Right?’ Colbert Faces Off with Obama
After a comedy bit with the leader of the free world, Stephen Colbert interviewed President Obama and touched on everything from the midterms to Keystone to Obama’s 2008 warnings about executive power.
The president told Colbert young people didn’t turn out for the Democrats in the midterms because they were just very turned off by Washington in general. Colbert brought up this week’s good job numbers and asked, “Why didn’t you fix the economy before the midterm elections?”
Colbert engaged in some light banter about what it must like to be president and whether Obama can tell him just one digit of the nuclear launch codes.
The interview did get a bit more serious when Colbert brought up Obama talking in 2008 about executive power and asked him what happened, seeing as he has a lot of power now. Obama said he just wants to get things done for the American people within the boundaries of the office, but would prefer to have Congress do its job.
(By the way, there was one point when Obama called Colbert “Bill,” meaning either he flubbed a bit or Colbert was so good at imitating O’Reilly that the president couldn’t tell the difference.)
