Watch The Independent Spirit Awards Purple Carpet Live Here
The night before the Oscars, IFC is celebrating its Independent Spirit Awards, live on the network at 10PM Eastern. The award ceremony, hosted this year by Seth Rogen, only permits films made with less than $20 million to compete, and often results in much more offbeat films winning the top prizes and the creation of indie stars.
Reuters put together a fascinating comparisons of how the awards have been distributed compared to the Oscars in recent memory:
This, after all, is the awards show that chose “Pulp Fiction” when the Oscars went for “Forrest Gump,” “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” when the Academy opted for “Gladiator,” “Memento” over “A Beautiful Mind,” “Sideways” over “Million Dollar Baby.”
In the last six years they chose “Brokeback Mountain” when the Oscars took “Crash,” “Little Miss Sunshine” when the Academy chose “The Departed,” and “Black Swan” the day before the Oscars crowned “The King’s Speech.”
