At the same time President Joe Biden criticized former President Donald Trump for using campaign funds to pay his mounting legal bills, Axios reported on Friday that the Democratic National Committee covered some of Biden’s legal bills.

A report by Axios’s Alex Thompson stated that according to the DNC’s financial filings, the org “paid more than $1.5 million to lawyers or firms representing Biden” in the special counsel investigation into his classified documents case. Special Counsel Robert Hur ultimately did not pursue charges against the president.

Per Axios:

From July 2023 to February 2024, the DNC paid $1.05 million to Bob Bauer PLLC — the professional limited liability company for Biden’s lead attorney, Bob Bauer.

Also:

Starting last July, the DNC increased its monthly payments to law firm Hemenway & Barnes from $15,000 to $100,000.

Special counsel Hur’s final report, released in February, identified Jennifer Miller — who works at Hemenway & Barnes — as one of Biden’s attorneys.

It’s unclear how much of the increased payments were for Miller and her work on Biden’s case, and the expanded role the firm was taking in DNC work.

The DNC declined to say exactly how much money it spent on legal work related to Hur’s probe.

DNC spokesperson Alex Floyd also told Axios: “There is no comparison — the DNC does not spend a single penny of grassroots donors’ money on legal bills — unlike Donald Trump, who actively solicits legal fees from his supporters and has drawn down every bank account he can get his hands on, like a personal piggy bank.”

Mediaite also reached out to the Biden administration for comment, but did not get a response.

The Axios report pointed out that Trump “almost certainly has spent many times more of his campaign money on legal fees, in response to the criminal and civil investigations into his actions on Jan. 6, an alleged sexual assault, his real estate businesses and his own handling of classified documents,” citing an amount of over $100 million according to The New York Times.

Trump also continues to solicit his supporters for money that may or may not go towards his mounting legal fees. Lara Trump, daughter-in-law of the ex-president and co-chair of the RNC, denied to NBC’s Garrett Haake that the RNC supports paying Trump’s legal bills. However, funds from the RNC do get diverted to Trump’s Save America PAC, 85 percent of which went Trump’s lawyers in the first two months of 2024.

But it does put a damper on Biden mocking Trump for using campaign funds to pay his legal fees since, according to the filings, he has basically done the same thing, albeit a fraction of what Trump has pulled from the RNC.
