CNN Legal Analyst Blasts Supreme Court for Taking So Long to Rule on ‘Absurdity’ of Trump’s Immunity Claim
CNN legal analyst Norm Eisen expressed bafflement as to why the U.S. Supreme Court has taken so long to rule on whether former President Donald Trump is immune from criminal prosecution.
Trump was convicted in New York last month of falsifying business records and is under indictment in three other jurisdictions – two of which are federal cases. In January, the former president’s attorneys argued before the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals that Trump cannot be prosecuted for official acts he committed while in office – including having his political rivals assassinated by SEAL Team Six.
The court ruled against Trump, prompting his attorneys to appeal to the Supreme Court, which heard oral arguments in April. Despite issuing the court issuing several opinions this week, the immunity case was not one of them.
“Norm, it’s interesting that the court isn’t scheduled to issue more decisions until Thursday, further delaying any resolution to Trump’s immunity claim,” Wolf Blitzer said on Friday’s edition of The Situation Room. “At what point does holding that trial before the election become totally unrealistic.”
“Well, Wolf, we’re on the brink of that,” replied Eisen, who noted the Supreme Court was first asked to take up the immunity question last year, but punted for the time being. “This question of whether the immunity that Donald Trump asserts – even to send SEAL Team Six to assassinate his political rivals was first place before the Supreme Court on December 11, 2023. There’s no call to take six months to decide the absurdity of that question. And with every passing day, they’re more responsible for the problem you identify of getting this trial on the books.”
