CNN’s Chris Wallace Confronts Al Michaels Over Most Randomly Bizarre Claim Ever

CNN anchor Chris Wallace asked broadcasting legend Al Michaels to confirm what could very well be the most bizarrely random claim anyone’s made since another Al said “Dogs can’t look up.”

Wallace interviewed Michaels for this week’s edition of his Max series Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace  — now available exclusively on Max, and no longer airing a weekly highlights version on CNN. Instead of two or three episodes, the show hosts one guest per week now, since Wallace will also be hosting the newsy The Chris Wallace Show on CNN Saturday mornings later this fall.

In the wide-ranging interview, Michaels told Wallace the story behind his iconic “Do you believe in miracles?” call at the 1980 Winter Olympics, his long and illustrious career in broadcasting, and his take on the future of sports and sports media.

But along the way, Wallace challenged Michaels on an offbeat claim — right down to the odd “knowingly” disclaimer — which the iconic sportscaster insists is true:

WALLACE: Is it true that you have never knowingly eaten a vegetable in your life?

MICHAELS: That is true. (That is true.) I was born when my parents were 18. And my mother hadn’t even read Dr. Spock at that point. So she just let me have the run of the, of the course. And I always push the vegetables away. To this day, no. And I guess what I proven Chris, is that man does not need vegetables to survive.

WALLACE: But, is it just possible, that you would like I’m thinking of one of the more non-objectionable vegetables, a carrot.

MICHAELS: Oh, please. (A carrot?) No, that’s an objectionable vegetable.

WALLACE: I mean, I was really, I mean, how would you know you’ve never tasted it?

MICHAELS: I look at it. I just don’t even like the look of it. And I surmise what it might taste like in terms of the texture of it. I think a lot of it probably has to do, it just doesn’t look like something that would go down well. Now you put a big steak in front of me and I’m going let’s go.
