The View Hosts Declare Biden Shouldn’t ‘Lower’ Himself to Debate with Trump Because ‘He Is an Illegitimate Candidate’

A majority of the View table on Thursday declared President Joe Biden is under no obligation to debate Donald Trump following the former president calling for a debate with Biden.

The discussion on The View centered on a tense back-and-forth between White House Press Secretary Karine Jeane-Pierre and Fox News reporter Peter Doocy in which Doocy repeatedly pressed the press secretary for a commitment from Biden to debate Trump now that he’s the presumptive GOP nominee. Jeane-Pierre repeatedly referred Doocy to Biden’s campaign, but insisted the president would perform well.

Joy Behar suggested Biden shouldn’t “lower” himself to sharing a stage with Trump and recommended a push up contest between the 81-year-old president and his 77-year-old challenger instead.

“The politics of it are smart. If Joe Biden doesn’t show up, Donald Trump is going to run with ‘he’s not up to the task, he’s too old,'” Alyssa Farah Griffin, a former Trump White House communications official, pushed back.

“Why does he have to do what you know who didn’t have to do?” Whoopi Goldberg asked, referring to Trump skipping GOP primary debates.

The former president repeatedly said he did not need to debate other GOP hopefuls because of his wide polling lead. Nikki Haley, the last of those hopefuls, suspended her campaign after Super Tuesday.

Golberg said she was frustrated that everyone “jumps” when Trump “snaps” his fingers.

“I don’t like that every time he snaps his finger, everybody has to jump,” she said.

Sunny Hostin pushed against a debate the hardest, but still argued Biden would outperform Trump.

“He doesn’t have to debate because debates are not mandatory. They are not mandatory, and the other thing is Donald Trump better be careful because in 2020 when they had their little debate, Biden swept the floor with him,” she said.

She continued, “Why legitimize a candidate like Donald Trump? He is twice-impeached, he is a one-term president, he has 91 counts — criminal counts pending against him, okay!? He has been found civilly liable for assault. He’s got no money!”

She declared at another point, “He’s a liar!”

Sara Haines argued a debate where the microphones for candidates can be switched off would be beneficial.

“He is an illegitimate candidate!” Hostin said about Trump, adding, “when Donald Trump’s mic is on, he’s going to spew misinformation, he’s going to lie, he is going to name call because he’s a criminal!”

Goldberg argued Biden will let Trump and everyone else know when he’s “ready” to commit to a debate.

“When Joe Biden is ready, he’ll let somebody know when he wants to debate,” she said.
