Pope Francis Is Taking Homeless People to the Beach and Out For Pizza This Summer
In the summer, volunteerism pretty much goes out the window because people take breaks. Unfortunately, homeless people do not have the option to take a break from being homeless just because it’s the summer. Pope Francis, the Vatican’s resident cool pope is attempting to give Rome’s homeless population respite, even if it’s just for the day.
According to Vatican Insider, the Pope has put Archbishop Konrad Krajewski in charge of organizing trips to the beach for around 10 homeless people at a time, courtesy of the Vatican, which also provides towels and bathing suits. People can sunbathe, swim, and forget their troubles for the day. As is typical in Italy, the day ends with a trip to a pizzeria.
Krajewski said, “We certainly are not saving the world with some of these initiatives, we are not solving the problems of the homeless in Rome, but at least we are restoring to them a little dignity.”
This is not the Pope’s first step to help the homeless population near Vatican City. He’s also set up a barber shop and showers in St. Peter’s Square.
