The Daily Beast deleted an article on Thursday in which author Michael Wolff claimed convicted child predator Jeffrey Epstein was involved in President Donald Trump’s introduction to Melania Trump.
An attorney on behalf of the first lady challenged the framing of the outlet’s story, and an editor’s note was published in place of the article.
“Editor’s Note. After this story was published, The Beast received a letter from First Lady Melania Trump’s attorney challenging the headline and framing of the article. After reviewing the matter, the Beast has taken down the article and apologizes for any confusion or misunderstanding,” the company’s statement read.
Wolff has made explosive claims in the past in his books, which have sometimes been met with challenges and skepticism, including in his book The Fall, which is about Fox News. New York Times White House correspondent Maggie Haberman questioned Wolff’s credibility over his 2018 book Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, calling it “light in copy editing and fact checking.”
Wolff recently appeared on The Daily Beast’s podcast with Joanna Coles where he claimed that Melania Trump was involved in Epstein’s social circle and that’s how she met her husband, who was a former friend of Epstein.
“She’s introduced by a model agent, both of whom Trump and Epstein are involved with. She’s introduced to Trump that way. Epstein [knew] her well,” the author alleged.
Epstein died of an apparent suicide in 2019 while being charged with sex trafficking.
The first lady recently dropped an excerpt from her memoir on X, where she told the story of meeting her husband. According to her, they met at New York City’s Kit Kat Club.
