Joe Rogan Defends Dave Chappelle Netflix Special: ‘The Overall Message Is In No Way Transphobic’
Joe Rogan has defended Dave Chappelle after his most recent Netflix special was slammed as transphobic and offensive.
Rogan took issue with the fact that Chappelle, who had “just joked around about stuff,” was now considered “the enemy,” claiming people were just looking for someone to be offended by.
“It becomes this weird control level where people start to conflate — when you start equating jokes with real feelings, they are not the same thing,” he added on Tuesday’s The Joe Rogan Experience.
Rogan called the notion that there are certain things one should not make fun of “dangerous,” adding that it’s “not good for anybody.”
“The idea that no fun can be had about any of this is crazy, because the idea is then that all fun is done maliciously and out of hate, and we know as friends, that is just not true,” Rogan said, adding, “There is fun in making fun of each other and we have to accept that.”
Rogan went on to say that one’s “real feelings” about gay and trans people, as well as about “all religions and all races and all ethnicities,” adding that Chappelle “loves everybody” and “is not a hateful soul.”
Rogan claimed Chappelle was just finding the balance between “talking shit about things and saying outrageous things that get huge laughs” and “placating really sensitive groups that feel like they are in a protected class.”
“I’m telling you that Dave Chappelle doesn’t hate anyone or anything. He’s not that person. His jokes are just that, they’re just jokes,” he said, adding, “Just really pay attention to the overall message, it is in no way transphobic, it’s just not.”
Rogan’s guest Michael Malice then predicted that the outrage was coming from “low-status people” who were trying to compete with Chappelle, claiming that “rando” journalists were trying to “takedown” the comedian to elevate their own status.
