WATCH: Anthony Hopkins Pays Tribute to Chadwick Boseman After Surprise Oscar Win

Anthony Hopkins honored the late actor Chadwick Boseman on Monday as he accepted the 2021 Best Actor award from the Oscars.

The Oscars ended in an unusual fashion on Sunday night since the award show typically concludes with Best Picture prize, but this year, they ended it with the Best Actor category. Between this arrangement and Boseman’s passing from colon cancer in August, a lot of viewers suspected that the Oscars was setting itself up for a finale that would posthumously honor Boseman for his acclaimed performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

Hopkins ended up being declared the winner for his role in The Father, which led to a lot of viewers revolting against the Oscars for ending on a sour note to Boseman. The Welsh actor was not at the Oscars to accept the award in person, and on Monday, he got on Instagram to give a morning-after acceptance speech.

In his video, Hopkins didn’t comment on the outrage directly, but he led by saying “I did not expect to get this award. I really didn’t.” As he went on with his thank you’s, Hopkins commemorated Boseman’s life by saying “I want to pay tribute to Chadwick Boseman, who was taken from us far too early.”

“Again, thank you all very much,” he said. “I really did not expect this, so I feel very privileged and honored. Thank you.”
