WATCH: Roy Wood Jr. Mouths Subtle Message During Trevor Noah’s Emmy’s Win Pleading For New Daily Show Host

Roy Wood Jr. confirmed the suspicions of Internet sleuths — after viewers noticed the message he tried to get across while he and his fellow Daily Show correspondents were on stage at the 75th Emmy Awards Monday.

Wood joined Trevor Noah on stage — as the former Daily Show host accepted the Outstanding Variety Talk Series award. As Noah thanked everyone involved with the show during his time as host, Wood stood behind him, repeatedly mouthing something at the camera.

Amateur lip-readers deduced that the message was “please hire a host.” And Wood confirmed it in a statement to the Hollywood Reporter, telling them, “I was saying, ‘Please hire a host.’ I probably shouldn’t have done it, but this has been going on too long. Get it together!…But I’m so happy that [Noah] won.”

Wood cracked wise about the covert message in a post on X, formerly Twitter:

Ever since Noah left The Daily Show in late 2022, the show has seen a constant rotation of guest hosts, and Comedy Central has yet to determine a permanent replacement. Wood, a longtime correspondent for the show, was thought to be one of the most likely successors to Noah, but he left The Daily Show in October, and the coveted seat remains vacant.
