At Least 10 Killed in Shooting at Austria School, Several Others Injured

 

At least ten people are believed dead and several others injured in a school shooting in the southern Austrian city of Graz on Tuesday morning.

In footage filmed near the secondary school in Dreierschützengasse, which circulated online during and after the attack, gunshots and panicked screams can be heard as the shooting unfolded at around 10 a.m. local time (4 a.m. ET).

Police confirmed at a press conference that several people were shot dead with the city’s mayor, Elke Kahr, describing the incident as a “terrible tragedy.”

Among the fatalities are seven school students and an adult, Austria’s APA News Agency reported.

Police said the shooter is among the dead after they apparently killed themself. According to the BBC, local media reported that the suspected shooter was a student.

Dozens of police units responded to the scene, including a Cobra tactical unit, which specializes in attacks and hostage situations, alongside ambulance crews.

Graz is Austria’s second-largest city with a population of about 300,000 people.
