Ben Shapiro Takes Torch to His Own Colleague’s ‘Weird’ Idea That Conservatives Must Unify With Far-Right
The Daily Wire’s Ben Shapiro — whether he realized it or not — torched his colleague’s “weird” idea that conservatives must unify with the far-right on Thursday.
Shapiro reacted to a bombshell Politico story about a Young Republicans group chat full of racist and otherwise offensive commentary on his show Thursday,
“If you put that stuff online, if you put that stuff in chats — if you actually authentically think that stuff, first of all, you’re wrong — but second of all, if you put stuff online, there are social consequences to saying and believing truly terrible things,” argued Shapiro, who added that “We all have social lines that we draw all the time.”
He went on to argue that “there’s this weird idea on the right that the left wins because they’re totally unified and they completely side with one another. The left is not winning! I know that we are sort of a depressive right, that we’ve gotten addicted to the depressive. The left is not winning! Donald Trump has been president dos times, two times. Republicans are in control of the Senate. Republicans are in control of the House. Republicans are in control of the majority of governor’s mansions. Republicans are in control of the majority of state legislatures. The left is not winning because of their unity.”
He continued:
They are being destroyed because of the thing I’m talking about happening on the right, because they decided that the nutjobs and the radicals in their own party could not be condemned under any circumstances. They decided to feature Ilhan Omar on the cover of magazines and unite around the crazy college protesters, and the BLM rioters, and the transgender radicals. And guess what? They got their asses kicked because of it.
Yes, they didn’t expel people from their party, But moderates walked away, the non-crazy walked away. This is the dirty little secret of how Donald Trump won the election of 2024. He ran as a moderate, people who are moderate picked him above the unified left that was siding with all of their radicals, and defending all of their radicals, and massaging all of their radicals. Because it turns out this is a very big country with an awful lot of people, and the vast majority of them are not loon bags. And the vast majority of them don’t like the lunacy.
And beyond that, We need to be real about the agenda of many of the people who are continuing to rely on the kindness of the quote-unquote “traditional republicans” who quote, un-quote, “don’t want to attack right.” Marjorie Taylor Greene is dividing the Republican Party, not the people criticizing Marjorie Taylor Greene. She is attacking the president day in and day out. Who’s dividing the party, the people Who mentioned it or Marjorie Taylor Greene?
Notably, Shapiro’s colleague Matt Walsh has been among the most vocal proponents of not “punching right.”
“During the gender ideology fight, I made it clear that I would happily align with liberal feminists who hate my guts for the purpose of defeating transgenderism. They mostly declined that invitation and turned around and disavowed me instead, which I expected, but the invitation was sincere. I will work with anyone to defeat an evil. This has always been my stance. When it comes to fighting the Left and defeating the people who want to kill me and my family and piss on my grave, I will unite with anyone on the Right. Even those I don’t like and who don’t like me,” wrote Walsh after the publication of the Politico story. “If you think this is ‘unprincipled’ or morally compromised, then you simply don’t understand how to fight and actually win a battle. A fractured conservative movement will fail. Only a united front can succeed. If you reject this invitation just as the feminists did, that’s fine. It’s your right. It won’t be the first time I’ve reached out my hand and gotten a hearty ‘fuck you’ in response. It doesn’t hurt my feelings. But it does hurt the cause. And that’s what I care about.”
He followed that up with a thread doubling down on his position.
“The Left actually wants me dead. Like specifically and personally. They’re the reason why I need security at my house. Why I worry for my children’s safety. We’ve had to make major changes to the way we live our daily lives to account for this danger. So when I say that I want to stop the in-fighting and unite against this threat, that’s the context,” he explained. “I’m sorry if the squabbles among right wingers just kind of pale in comparison for me. If you have the luxury to care more about that, I envy you. I truly do.”
