Biden Lampoons Trump at Closed-Door DC Media Banquet: One Candidate is ‘Too Old’ and ‘Mentally Unfit’ — The Other is Me

President Joe Biden went full stand up comic Saturday night at a banquet in Washington — roasting former President Donald Trump and his allies before a bipartisan audience of political and media elites.

In remarks at the annual Gridiron Club dinner (at which cameras are prohibited), the 81-year-old Biden pilloried Trump by inverting the frequent criticism he receives about his age and cognitive function.

“The big news this week is two candidates clinched their parties’ nomination for president,” Biden said (via ABC News and others). “One candidate is too old, mentally unfit to be president. The other’s me.”

Biden went on to go after Congressional Republicans.

“They want a secure border but they block it for the strongest border bill ever,” Biden said. “They take credit for one [of the] biggest infrastructure laws but voted against it. And I’m the one confused?”

The president turned serious and tried to appeal to a press corps with which it has feuded at times.

“He calls you the enemy of the people,” Biden said, referring to Trump. He added, “Let me state the obvious, you are not the enemy of the people,” Biden said. “You are a pillar of any free society. And I may not always agree with your coverage or admire it, but I do admire your courage. Good journalism holds a mirror up to a country for us to reflect the good, the bad, the truth about who we are.”
