CNN’s Harry Enten Trashes Elon Musk’s ‘America Party’ as a Fool’s Errand: ‘Like Selling Sand in the Desert!’

Elon Musk’s announcement of a new “America Party” over the weekend may have exploded on social media, but it’s likely to be a dud at the ballot box — at least according to one major data guru.

Appearing on CNN News Central Monday, CNN senior data analyst Harry Enten completely panned Musk’s third party gambit.

“This entire thing makes very little sense to me,” Enten said. “It makes about as much sense as selling sand in the desert!”

Enten believes Musk does not have a large pool of support to draw on. He explained that the Venn D

iagram between Republican party voters and those who like Elon Musk consists of two nearly overlapping circles. And as a result, Musk can only count on support from a very small faction of voters.

“What is the size of Elon Musk’s base? … those who view Elon Musk favorably, and the GOP unfavorably,” Enten said. “We’re talking just about four percent of all voters out there — because it turns out most of the people who like Elon Musk already like the GOP. That is, they already have a party for them. In my mind, there is just no base for Elon Musk’s third party in the electorate, at least initially speaking.”

And the prospects for the America Party are not just bad at the presidential level, according to Enten, but also at the congressional level.

“What’s the history of third party candidates in congressional races?” CNN’s John Berman asked Enten.

“Horrible!” Enten replied. “Awful! Terrible, terrible, terrible!”

Still, the big fear from many MAGA influencers over the weekend is that Musk will swing the 2026 midterms to the Democrats. And Enten did not dismiss that possibility.

“He could spoil it for the GOP,” Enten said. “But he probably can’t win it himself.”
