Colorado Authorities Open Probe Into Hunter S. Thompson’s Death — 20 Years Later

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is taking a fresh look at the death of Hunter S. Thompson after receiving a request from his widow.

Thompson’s death will be reviewed over 20 years after he died in 2005 from what the investigation concluded was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas writer’s last note was published in Rolling Stone, for which he had written, seven months after his death.

“No More Games. No More Bombs. No More Walking. No More Fun. No More Swimming. 67. That is 17 years past 50. 17 more than I needed or wanted. Boring. I am always bitchy. No Fun — for anybody. 67. You are getting Greedy. Act your old age. Relax — This won’t hurt,” Thompson wrote in the note found after his death in February 2005.

The message was titled, “Football Season Is Over.”

Thompson was known for writing bestsellers like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream and Hell’s Angels. His first-person style of reporting became known as Gonzo journalism.

Thompson has been portrayed on the big screen three times,  twice by Johnny Depp and once by Bill Murray.

Depp and Thompson were longtime friends, and the actor covered much of the cost of the author’s funeral.

The author was dealing with health issues at the time 67 years old. He died on his ranch in Woody Creek, Colorado. His widow, Anita Thompson, has now requested a new investigation into her late husband’s death. There is no deadline for the new investigation. Officials also stressed that there is no new evidence of foul play.

“We understand the profound impact Hunter S. Thompson had on this community and beyond,” Sheriff Michael Buglione of Pitkin County announced. “By bringing in an outside agency for a fresh look, we hope to provide a definitive and transparent review that may offer peace of mind to his family and the public.”
