Democratic Congressional Candidate Kat Abughazaleh Claims Cop Hit Her With Baton During ICE Protest

Illinois congressional candidate Kat Abughazaleh (D) claimed she was struck in the face with a baton as protesters faced off against cops outside an ICE detention facility on Friday morning.

Abughazaleh, who is running for Congress in Illinois’s 9th district, was among numerous protesters at the ICE facility in Broadview on Friday morning when Illinois State Police advanced while clutching batons.

“Cops led us into the street as the new ‘protest zone’ and then beat us repeatedly,” Abughazaleh said in a social media post. “Got hit in the face with a baton. Leaving to pick up my friends who were arrested.”

She added: “Stay safe out there.”

While a video posted to social media showed Abughazaleh tossed over a barrier by her feet, no other clips showed her being struck by a baton.

Nine people were arrested, according to Fox 32.

The Broadview location was also the scene of another protest last month, where Abughazaleh was tossed to the ground by an ICE agent.

Videos from the incident showed the officer hoisting up Abughazaleh and slamming her to the ground. She landed on her backside with an audible thud.

Following the incident, Abughazaleh took to social media to say, “My body hurts and will probably hurt way more tomorrow.”

She added: “What ICE just did to me was a violent abuse of power — and yet it’s nothing compared to what they’re doing to immigrant communities.”
