Comedian and commentator Dave Smith blasted Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard after she aligned herself with President Donald Trump on Iran and accused the media of “spreading fake news” about her position on Iran.

Trump acknowledging that the United States military could get more directly involved in escalating fighting between Israel and Iran has led to a split in the MAGA crowd. Smith, a Libertarian who voted for Trump, has been one of the vocal voices pushing for diplomacy over opening the door to a new war and he’s already called for the president’s impeachment amid looming questions about Iran.

Smith was once a defender of Gabbard, but in a new X post he called her the “Colin Powell of the administration.”

“Wow, Tulsi is now the Colin Powell of this administration. She knows better but has chosen to lie through her teeth to sell a war,” Smith wrote.

The comedian’s message was in response to Gabbard claiming the media is spreading “fake news” about her past statements on Iran and its nuclear capabilities.

“The dishonest media is intentionally taking my testimony out of context and spreading fake news as a way to manufacture division. America has intelligence that Iran is at the point that it can produce a nuclear weapon within weeks to months, if they decide to finalize the assembly. President Trump has been clear that can’t happen, and I agree,” Gabbard wrote on X.

She included testimony she gave in March that has come under question as Trump has directly rebuked her multiple times.

Trump has been asked multiple times about Gabbard testifying at the time that the intelligence community does not believe Iran is actively trying to build a nuclear weapon.

“I don’t care what she said,” Trump recently told reporters when asked about Gabbard’s testimony, insisting Iran was “very close” to having a nuclear weapon.

Confronted again on Friday about the statement, Trump flatly said, “She’s wrong.”

Smith accused Gabbard of flipping her position to align herself with the president.

“She’s worse than the others because she spent her career pretending to be against regime change war in Iran. What an utter disgrace!” he wrote. “Weeks?! Weeks?! This is just made up today. It contradicts every single piece of intelligence on Iran for 20 years. Even Netanyahu never went so far.”
