Fox Anchor Bill Hemmer Scolds Matt Schlapp and Chris Hahn: ‘You Guys Would Be Great in a Bar But It’s 10 in the Morning’

American Conservative Union Chair Matt Schlapp clashed with Democratic strategist Chris Hahn in a Wednesday Fox News interview, prompting host Bill Hemmer to suggest they “take it to a bar.”

The exchange took place during a debate over the detention of young immigrants. The Biden administration opened its first detention center in Carrizo Springs, Texas, this month. The facility holds capacity for 700 teenagers who cross the border unaccompanied.

“It is important we take the right steps to make sure people come to this country legally, and the fact is the way the law reads right now, Joe Biden has, actually, no choice but to separate those kids if he is to follow the law, just like Donald Trump had no choice,” Schlapp said. “We deserve a big apology from the Biden administration and all his supporters who said that was racist.”

Hahn shot back, “I just listened to Matt say the former guy [Trump] deserves an apology for separating kids from their parents, ripping them from their arms sometimes. And if they didn’t do that, they sent them to Mexico where they were exploited and some even died. The former guy’s policy on immigration was ridiculous.”

He then invoked the Conservative Political Action Committee (CPAC), the annual event organized by Schlapp’s group. The four-day event is scheduled to take place in Orlando, Florida this year beginning on Thursday.

“If conservatives are serious about fixing the problem, CPAC should spend less time on the big lie this weekend and more time talking about the 2013 Immigration Reform Act that had bipartisan support in the Senate and should be passed now by Congress,” Hahn said.

Schlapp took exception with Hahn’s reference to the “big lie.”

“When Chris criticizes this idea that minors are separated from adults — remember, we have no proof that they’re their parents in most of these cases — he is criticizing Barack Obama who bought those cages, opened these facilities, and did the very same thing.”

Hahn erupted: “They’ve got seven sessions on the big lie that led to an insurrection, and they’re calling the democratic party anti-constitutional. Please, spare me your indignation, Matt, and get with the program. Acknowledge that Joe Biden was president at the beginning of CPAC so the American people can move on from the big lie that your future speaker will be talking about all weekend.”

After some lively back-and-forth, Hahn referenced a Delaware man who was accused of using the names of his late mother and mother-in-law to vote, telling Schlapp, “The only illegal vote was cast by a Republican by his dead mom!”

Hemmer, who had been attempting to end the segment, interjected, telling the duo, “Whoa! Hey now, hey now. You guys would be great in a bar, but not at 10 in the morning.”
