Fox News Star Bret Baier Addresses Reports Bari Weiss Is Eyeing Him for CBS
Fox News anchor Bret Baier addressed speculation that CBS News, now helmed by editor-in-chief Bari Weiss, is eyeing him to front its flagship Evening News broadcast – rumors he says he’s flattered by, but firmly downplays.
Appearing on the Citizen McCain podcast Monday with host Meghan McCain, Baier was asked directly about reports that Weiss had been “considering” him for the top job, just hours after CBS Evening News anchor John Dickerson announced his departure.
“I’m flattered by all the press and everything like that, but I’m in a multi-year contract with Fox. So I don’t know where everything’s going. I’m signed on to Fox, very happy at Fox. And, you know, we’ll see what happens at the end of that,” he said.
“But it’s interesting to see all the press about,” he added.
Weiss, who became CBS News chief following David Ellison’s takeover earlier this year, has been overhauling the network’s structure and sounding out fresh faces for coverage.
Industry sources had told Status’s Oliver Darcy on Sunday that Weiss has been “quietly canvassing” for an anchor who could redefine the network’s tone, with Baier among those floated.
Baier, who reportedly earns about $14 million annually and extended his Fox contract through to the end of 2028, made clear any move would be years away.
McCain wrapped the exchange by clarifying, “Official confirmation: Bret Baier is not taking over CBS Evening News, at least for now.”
