‘I Hear AOC’s Gonna Beat Him!’ Trump Taunts Chuck Schumer With Primary Challenge That Polls Show He’d Lose
President Donald Trump taunted Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) during a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday in which he suggested that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) would be condemning Schumer to an involuntary retirement.
Trump’s comments came after Real America’s Voice’s Brian Glenn praised Trump for his response to the deadly Texas floods that have dominated headlines since this weekend. After Glenn finished and stated that he had two questions for the president, Trump interrupted.
“I saw a Palestinian senator, his name is Schumer. He’s a great Palestinian. No, he’s a Palestinian. He’s become a Palestinian, he has abandoned the Jews,” began Trump to laughs. “But I saw him say, ‘It’s Trump’s fault. Yeah, yeah, that’s right. It’s Trumps fault.’ He was actually, do you ever see John Lovitz, the liar? Where he goes, ‘Yeah, yeah. I went to Harvard. That’s right.’ This was Schumer, he goes, ‘Yeah, yeah, it’s Trump’s fault. That’s right, it’s Trump.'”
“I actually saw that stupid guy try and blame it on me and I said, ‘Man, that’s a tough one to take,'” he continued. “But his career is limited because I hear AOC is gonna beat him. And she’s no bargain either, by the way.”
Polling suggests that Schumer, who has served as his caucus’s leader since 2017, in the Senate since 1999, and in Congress since 1981, would likely lose if Ocasio-Cortez mounted a primary challenge to him in 2028.
One survey of likely Democratic voters in the Empire State conducted by Data for Progress in March found that 55% of respondents would back Ocasio-Cortez, while just 36% would vote to reelect Schumer.
Another poll from May suggested that Ocasio-Cortez enjoyed an even larger, 21-point advantage over Schumer (54%-33%).
Schumer has called for “an investigation into the scope, breadth, and ramifications of whether staffing shortages at key local National Weather Service (NWS) stations contributed to the catastrophic loss of life and property during the deadly flooding.”
