‘I’m a Woman Of My Word!’ Nikki Haley Vows To Stay In Race After Losing To Trump in Home State of South Carolina
Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley vowed to continue her primary fight against Donald Trump after losing the primary to him in the state on Saturday by, at the time of this post, a margin of about 20 points.
Haley said earlier in the week that she would continue in the primary no matter how the numbers turned out in the state’s primary, the fourth contest so far in the GOP’s nomination fight.
Trump, by most projections, is the all-but-certain nominee for the party and will face off against President Joe Biden in a repeat of the 2020 election he lost to the Democrat after all the primary challengers but Haley have dropped out and endorsed him.
In her speech in South Carolina on Saturday, Haley said it was a time to share some “hard truths,” but after that misdirect said she is staying in the fight and that Republican voters want and deserve a “real choice.”
“Today in South Carolina, we’re getting around 40% of the vote. That’s about what we got in New Hampshire, too,” said Haley. “I’m going to count it. I know 40% is not 50%. But I also know 40% is not some tiny group.”
“There are huge numbers of voters in our Republican primaries who are saying they want an alternative,” she continued. “I said earlier this week that no matter what happens in South Carolina, I would continue to run for president. I’m a woman of my word.”
Haley laid into Trump, along with Biden, throughout her remarks. If the numbers in South Carolina hold, and Haley comes in at 20 or fewer points, it will be less of a win for Trump than many projections but still a decisive win over Haley in the state where she once governed.
Nevertheless, the lesser margin has some calling it a “disaster” for Trump. And exit polls do show troubling results for the ex-president with voters who went for other candidates like Haley, and not for the first time in the GOP primary.
I’ve always seen our state as a family. What? Families are honest with each other. They say the hard truths. That’s what I’ve done this entire campaign. And that’s what I’ll do now.
What I saw today was South Carolina’s frustration with our country’s direction. I’ve seen that same frustration nationwide. I share it. I feel it to my core. I couldn’t be more worried about America. It seems like our country is falling apart.
But here’s the thing: America will come apart if we make the wrong choices. This has never been about me or my political future. We need to beat Joe Biden in November. I don’t believe Donald Trump can beat Joe Biden. Nearly every day, Trump drives people away, including with his comments just yesterday.
Today in South Carolina, we’re getting around 40% of the vote. That’s about what we got in New Hampshire, too. I’m going to count it. I know 40% is not 50%. But I also know 40% is not some tiny group.
There are huge numbers of voters in our Republican primaries who are saying they want an alternative. I said earlier this week that no matter what happens in South Carolina, I would continue to run for president. I’m a woman of my word.
I’m not giving up this fight, when a majority of Americans disapprove of both Donald Trump and Joe Biden.
